Boinc Download on LInux Fedora Core 7-i386 Hangs

I just installed BOINC on linux. After attaching to various projects, the download processes hand. I have to close the manager and restart it. At this point the download processes continue .... for a while.

Which version of BOINC? Where did you get it from, as a download from Berkeley, or as a through your distro? Do you have any problems with other projects, or is it Einstein only? Any error messages in the Messages log? What if you leave the manager alone for x amount of time, does it continue on its own? What does your top say that is happening at such times, does boinc or boinc manager get a lot of CPU time?

it is linux version 5.8.16 - i686 and I downloaded from this link boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php
the download problem occurs with any project (seti, rosetta or einstein)
for this install. no problem with win32 on same network.
Initially I left manager alone for 10 minutes when I noticed no progress in download tasks, only when I close and restared manager would download continue.
Unable to report on cpu utilization, all download tasks have been completed.
If important, I can login as a different user and reinstall same version of BOINC and monitor resources...

"Access to reference site failed"
BOINC checks if it can ping search engines on the internet. Search engines are always available. Most of the times it pings www.google.com directly. If it can't get an answer back from this website, you get the above message.
"- check network connection or proxy configuration."
So yes, check that you allowed BOINC through your firewall or if you are behind a proxy, that you set up the proxy in BOINC Manager's menu bar, Advanced, Options, HTTP or Socks proxy.
If you're trying this at work, do ask the network/IT people for permission to use BOINC.

1st running this at home on dsl connection.
2nd all network access work ok.
3rd there is no firewall or proxy server to contend with.
lastly, download resumes ok for a while after a boinc manager shutdown and restart.
