A new Windows App is available from our Beta Test Page.

We added a feature that we'll need for S5R3. As this App can still process S5R2 Tasks, we publish it in advance for people to test before S5R3 starts.

In addition to that, the sanity checks to track this annoying "Input domain" errors should be a little faster (and their output a bit more informative) now, so this App should be a little faster than the 4.38.

Windows S5R2/S5R3 App 4.40 available for Beta Test

Switching over now.

There are 10^11 stars in the galaxy. That used to be a huge number. But it's only a hundred billion. It's less than the national deficit! We used to call them astronomical numbers. Now we should call them economical numbers. - Richard Feynman

I started a new result with

I started a new result with v4.40 about an hour ago and it seems to be running fine. But, it is "way too early" for me to tell anything about "speed".

Happy to "give it a spin"!

Happy to "give it a spin"! :)

(It trashed the unit I had just begun using version 4.38, but I guess that was to be expected.)

I'd not have expected that. I've just transitioned four hosts from production 4.38 to the beta 4.40. I used the "simple, brave" method of just stopping boingmgr, copying the contents of the download ZIP to the project directory, and restarting boincmgr. All eight of the inflight results have resumed processing without apparent complaint.

Once the restart had run a couple of minutes, I paused a couple to get fresh pure results out as soon as possible for a quick read on the speedup/slowdown question. ASAP will be tomorrow, however.

I had an issue because my 4.38 was in a "slot" directory and not in the "Projects" directory, which seemed weird. I am using BOINC version 5.10.20.

The "slot" directory will just contain a link to the executable in the projects/einstein.phys.uwm.edu directory.

Thanks! It seemed that although I had put the contents of the zip file into the projects directory, the 4.38 application still ran! So I put the contents of the zip file into the "slots" directory, and that is when I lost my work and E@H would not run, it was trying to download the 4.40 exe file and could not find it of course!

Once I put the contents of the zip file also again into the "projects" folder, E@H ran the 4.40, but by then I had already lost my 4.38 workunit.

I have an additional machine at home I will try to switch to 4.40 tonight, and if the 4.38 still runs I will put the zip file contents also into the "slots" directory and see if that works! :)

That's normal. A result started with 4.38 and continued with 4.40 will show up as running under 4.38 .. it will also be reported as such.

The next result will start with 4.40 showing. So a next time, don't tamper with it. It's quite normal.

Thanks! That will save a workunit that is mostly completed! :)

If I understand you correctly, 4.38 will show but it is really 4.40 that is now doing the work? Weird but wonderful! Thanks again!

It depends on what you mean by "show" (or where you look)

In Boincmgr, the Application column of the tasks tab will show 4.38 for tasks which were already on the host when you inserted 4.40. They got "branded" when they arrived at the host, and this column shows that brand.

However, the app_info.xml you inserted from the 4.40 ZIP asserts than the 4.40 executable can and should run 4.38-branded results. So if you check what application is _really_ running at run time, for example, using Windows Task Manager, you'll see einstein_S5R2_4.40_windows_intelx86.exe.

Then again, if you check the result on the web page once it gets turned in, you'll see 4.38.

Once you start processing new results which downloaded to your host _after_ you copied the ZIP contents, everything will agree on 4.40 (until the next change).

Lastly, if you actually look for executables in the project directory, you'll find the 4.40 actually there, and the 4.38 gone, so that makes it really clear which one is running your work.
