Hi!
As to Shark: This is strange.

In the shark Preferences, you could try to disable "show only owned processes" , and then einstein app should appear in the list of processes, so you can target it specifically. Newer BOINC versions run the science app under a different user in Mac OS X.

It is frustrating that I can

It is frustrating that I can not get Shark to perform. I did as you suggested and was able to get directly to the Einstein app but it makes no difference to the overall problem.

Sampling starts (pop!) I give it ten seconds or so, sampling stops (pop!), it displays 'Analysing' and the progress bar chugs along. After which the status simply returns to 'Ready' but no result window is opened.

Is there anything else that needs to be installed for this to run? X11 or something? In fact, now I think about it, I might have X11 installed already? How do I tell?

[Edit] Forget that last bit; I see X11SDK.pkg in Library/Receipts so I'm guessing it's installed already.

Thanks.

If so you should have an X11.app package in your Utilities folder (at least, I think that’s the default location); double-clicking it in the Finder will launch xterm—which is very similar to the standard Terminal. The SDK might just be some libraries used for software development rather than the X11 system itself.

(I’ve never used Shark, so I have no idea whether or not X11 is relevant, or any of its libraries.)

I have an observation

I have an observation relating to hung WUs. I have seen quite a few WUs hang. Prior to upgrading to BOINC 5.10.20, I had 5.10.7 and I used the Make_BOINC_Service.sh script to set the BOINC client to run as a daemon/service.

The WU hanging issue I see may be related to BOINC client part of the overall BOINC Manager. After I went to 5.10.20 I did not run the script to make the client a daemon. I had a WU get stuck where the progess display stopped changing. Closing BOINC and restarting it got the WU moving again.

With the BOINC client running as a daemon, just closing BOINC manager and reopening it would not unhang WUs. I had to restart my computer to unhang the WUs.

I looked in my Developer / Xcode directories for Shark. All I seem to have is Sampler and Thread Viewer and a couple other items but no Shark. With Thread Viewer I managed to put BOINC Manager into the spinning beach ball state of non-responding.

I can't find X11 so Odysseus

Message 71582 in response to message 71580

I can't find X11 so Odysseus is no doubt correct that it is just a couple of libraries installed. Then again, Shark probably doesn't need it anyway. I haven't run any Boinc client as a daemon/service.

In fiddling with Shark some more, I found that if I select batch mode it will save a 'session'. Double-clicking this session bring up the error:
"*** -[GRGradientColor addColor:]: selector not recognized [self = 0x8c14870]"
However, double-clicking again opens a blank result window. I can click on the 'graph' button and I do indeed get a graph (which I have not yet managed to interpret). If I then click on the 'Profile' button (which I'm guessing is the bit Bernd M wants), I get the error:
"*** -[NSCFArray insertObject:atIndex:]: attempt to insert nil"

I think I've just got a dud installation. When the currently running WU ends tomorrow I might restart from the other HD and try it from there. Unless there are any new developments, I'll try not to bother you further! :-)

Thanks for all the trouble.

Thanks for all the trouble. With a bit of luck, you might be able to use the stored data after rebooting or re-installing shark, so it would be nice if you keep the recorded data.
