I use Avira Anti-Vir. It's free and I've never had any problems.

You might also want to look at AVAST. The 4 Home Edition is also free. I don't use it myself but a good friend of mine recommends it highly.
I am currently using McAfee and I recently had some problems with a program update that wound up impacting my "In progress" Einstein units. (Note: I am not blaming McAfee for the problems with Einstein - only for the problems with their update. That is, the issue I reported on the Windows S5R2 App 4.33 available for Beta Test thread also indicates a possible problem with the way Einstein writes/reads checkpoints.)

I looked into this question a year ago when I got fed up with Norton's renewal process.
At the time I concluded NOD32 from ESET looked to suit me best. I have run it for about a year on one Windows 98 and two XP machines.
The protection is reputed to be good, with frequent updates (about once or twice a day, think). The resource consumption is low.
However, it is not free. There are also a great many configuration options, which can take a while to work your way through if you don't just accept the defaults, though there are some pretty specific guides available on the net.

I use Live OneCare from Microsoft. It's not free, but it has the "advantage" that one can "cover" 3 PC. With the "exception" of unwanted mail, I have had not problems with PC-Virus'.

I've been using avast! home edition for a few months now and I'm pleased with it. It is a lot lighter on the CPU than McAfee and Norton plus it updates at least once daily. I don't recall with McAfee but I think Norton usually updated only weekly. I've also used Avira Anti-Vir but had problems with it updating; it would occasionally throw an error (Visual C++ Library Runtime Error or something similar) and lock up.
Of course as tullio humorously pointed out, viruses is not much of a problem with Linux and the various Unix derivatives, and Macs of course. That may change in the future if the other non-Windows OS's gain a larger "market" share.
