RE: So, my "new" vintage

So, my "new" vintage server has arrived:

Do you have to spend much time in the same room with that thing? The only box I've been near in that form factor had just awfully noisy fans. The small diameter required by the form factor, and the high flow wanted to get reasonable reliability in a possibly warm machine room pretty much requires really, really high fan noise, does it not?

Indeed. This box is meant to run at home only when I'm at work :-). It has about 7 or so little fans that give this typical noise you'll hear in server rooms.

But it does look cool on the shelf.

It would look cooler in a rack with a few more servers in there to keep it company! :)

Nice machine.

Yeah, if I buy a used rack the single server will look lost, I'd buy buy more and end up with a huge electricity bill :-). Well, maybe I buy one more of those anyway.

Once the Linux performance problem is completely solved, that box should generate results at a rate of about 450+ credits/day. Not bad for a 100 EURO deal :-). Well, ok, electricity is another story, but the PIII-S were not that hungry, and the server doesn't have a power hungry graphics accelerator, of course, only 512 MB of SDRAM and a single HD. Maybe 150 Watt max?? Will measure it some day soon.

Bikeman, try to remove the

Bikeman, try to remove the upper cover and cut of those case fans. You just need to install one 8cm or 12cm fan, may be even reconnect them from 12volts to 5 volts and you'll receive a quiet machine in server box with reduced power consumption. I did so with P4 Xeons and it works, because of cuprum radiators. Besides, it will not compile a lot of dust inside and can be cleared out by a simple squirrel brush.

P.S. The test with P5-75 was delayed alittle because of huge amount of work I have to do in a range of 130km outside my home in on direction and in 75km in another direction.

A dual Tualatin 1400 in 19"

A dual Tualatin 1400 in 19" for 100EUR? That's really a good deal.

1 year ago the naked CPU still went for more than 100 at EBay.

512MB RAM are a little short, if ECC registered SDRAM prices went down as much as the Tualatin prices, you should consider adding some more (you might need low profile)

With a total of 1GB you will be able to run all current BOINC projects, including coupled models at CPDN. The CPU is able to do those within the deadline.

p.s.: I used to run a few single 1133s with SETI Classic, they have been happy with passive cooling under full load. Your case doesn't allow that but when the noise annoys you some day, you might find a way to add bigger coolers with no fan (open case or matching holes where the coolers stick through). Besides the silence, they have another advantage : no dust bunnies in the cooler, thus no cleaning :-)

Yup, and so I ordered another one, so I now have four Tualatins crunching for E@H Home. You even get a 12 month warranty.

Currently I'm planning to use those boxes almost exclusively for E@H, and for this 512 MB of RAM under Linux is more than enough even on a dual CPU system.

I found a place in my apartment where the noise doesn't bother anyone, so I guess I'll leave the noisy and mostly redundant fans as they are for the moment.

The main boardalso features a PowerPC based CPU (probably at around 66MHz) as an embedded service processor, maybe Akos can write a special version of SETI@Home to run on that one ;-) .

Picked up an IBM x255, four

Picked up an IBM x255, four 2.0Ghz MP Xeons with 1GB memory in a 7U chassis, for $60 US last week. It will be delivered this afternoon. Need to clear a space for it in the 'puter room where it will join a pair of x360's, four SC450NX's (only two are running at present), and a Z Pro. I gave up on desk tops years ago and only use industrial strength boxes now. They run cool in hot weather (no AC in the house), they are easy to work on, and parts a usually cheap.

If only electricity wasn't

If only electricity wasn't that expensive, at least here in Germany where just now a 10% price increase has been announced for next year by one of the major players.

*Sigh*

Will the Xeons crunch for E@H?

The P4 Xeons will all be on

The P4 Xeons will all be on Einstein, except for the pair of 3.06Ghz cpu's in the Z Pro. They are still running the SMP app on FAH. The addition of the x255 makes a total of 12 MP Xeons, eight 2.0Ghz MP's and four 1.9Ghz MP's. The two SC450NX's are both running 4 PIII Xeons at 700Mhz and they are max'ed out cpu wise. I have 2 more that I may or may not put back online, they eat a lot of power for the number of WU's done. Their only saving grace is that they do 4 WU's at a time.

If you look at the 450's you'll notice the cpu's are listed at 600Mhz, it's a problem with the BIOS. Intel says they are running at 700Mhz but the BIOS lists them at 600! They were close to EoL when the 700's came out and Intel never bothered to fix it in BIOS.
