Tullio, I think you're worrying too much about the "hardware" end of things. This should be as simple as unplugging the old processor, plugging in the new one and booting back up. I honestly can't remember if SSE will have to be compiled into the linux kernel or not, but unless you really tweaked your kernel, it's probably in there already. WORST CASE is that you'd have to flash the BIOS on your motherboard, which is as simple as formatting a bootable floppy, putting the new BIOS from the manufacturer on it and following a couple of instructions to make it complete.

P.S. If Gary asks, I might just get those 600's 'topless' and take some risque pictures of that pair for him! ;)

Thanks, Thunder. Unfortunately, I am just now worrying about a piece of old (human) hardware called "prostate" and just leave my PII crunching happily. I cannot exchange that old hardware piece with a modern one, as I could do with a CPU. But let's hope for the better. Cheers.

Aye, I'll donate an old CPU, but I'm afraid I still have use for my old prostate! Good luck with yours!

Hi! I just bought an old

Hi!

I just bought an old IBM xSeries 330 Dual PIII-S 1400MHz Server on e-bay, should be able to install it next week, hopefully. I like the PIII and the Tualatin PIIIs with 512 KB Cache were not that slow at all. It's not really reasonable if you take electricity costs into consideration, but ... could not resist.

My PII has just finished its

My PII has just finished its last S5R2 WU with 470.77 credits using a Linux beta app and has now started its first S5R3 WU with the standard app, which seems to function. Also SETI@home and QMC@home WUs are being crunched on time. But I am thinking to make me a Xmas present with a CELL micro, that is a PS3. The Folding@home results produced by the PS3s are astonishing,to say the least.

Linux... I would love to put Linux on that P3 box. Unfortunately, it's not mine...

Hi!

The P3 is a fabulous cruncher, games console and a HD DVD player as well...you can't help but have fun with it, one way or another.

I'm looking forward to install by new box. The server itself was quite cheap, but you need a special adaptor/cable to connect monitor, keyboard and mouse, and that one is really expensive. Anyway, it's kind of a collectors item for me, so what...

To be more specific, the PS3 has a BluRay DVD player, which is sponsored by Sony against the HD DVD format, in a repetition of the tape format wars of the Eighties. Cheers.

A couple of days ago I've

A couple of days ago I've serched through my office for really old stuff... and I found Pentium-75 (without MMX) apart with a MoBo for it and an old and noisy Fujitsu HDD. I tried to build a box with it and now... it works under W2K and waiting to get new work. I'll build a software firewall from it and as a part of its life it will crunch S5R3 alittle. So... waiting for results... :)

Sorry to disappoint you,

Sorry to disappoint you, guys, but i meant P3 like "Pentium 3", not the Playstation. Never saw one of those up close (to be honest, I don't care for games consoles much).
Stranger: Sounds really interesting :-) that is really a vintage box. You think it's going to cope with Einstein deadlines okay?

Good point, actually I think a P-75 doesn't stand the slightest chance to complete a S5R3 result in under 2 weeks :-( . Even three weeks would surprise me. Remember it's still based on the P5 core, the next big leap in performance only came in 1995 with the Pentium PRO's P6 core and all it's goodies: suppport for L2 cache, speculative execution, out of order execution, ...
