FYI: gcaDService.exe suppreses BOINC

I started up my T60 laptop today (WinXP SP2, 80 GB HD, 1 GB RAM) and again no BOINC manager. (The other thread I have is about BONIC running for one shortcut and not the other, while the two shortcuts are the same.)
I clicked the shortcut that works (on the desktop) and only saw the cursor with "busy hour glass" image next to it. After a short while still no BOINC and only the hour glass cursor.
So I openned the Task Manager and saw "gcaDService.exe" soaking up half the CPU. I killed it once and then again (maybe there were two). Immediately the hour glass cursor disappeared, two instances of the einstein@home client appeard in the Task Manager list and the BONIC Manager appeared on the screen.
This proves to me that gcaDService.exe suppresses the operation of BOINC.

gcasDtServ.exe is the actual spelling.
It is eiter a WORM or TROJAN or MS antiSpyware. All I do know is that when it starts up with the system, it prevents the einstein@home client from running.

edit:I am running Windows Defender on both my computers and no interference with BOINC...(or GridRepublic)

My laptop (T60) has no such protection. My PC (3GHZ) has PCTools everything... and I have never seen that process on it.
It starts up every now and then. So I think of it now as a minor annoyance - just like any MS software! :)

Try Process explorer from Sysinternals(now part of MS),there is possibility to verify it and see other things about it...

It shows that my PCTools Spyware is running half of the time and my 2 einstein at home clients only 25% each = 50 + 2*25 = 100%.
However, the Task Manager is showing that each client is getting 50% CPU... what gives ... oh, it's another MS application ... no wonder things don't add up. :/

Not so fast...originaly it was not MS app,but MS bought it and developer joined them as well.
But why there is such difference I do not know,never observed it.
And did you tried looking at that gcaDService.exe?

1) Doesn't matter - MS touched it.
2) I haven't caught it in the act yet. I will reply again once I do and get some info on it.

Note: Any malware can be named anything - so you should check where the files of the running processes are located on your disk. If a "non-Microsoft" .exe file is located in the C:\\Windows or C:\\Windows\\System32 folder, then there is a high risk for a virus, spyware, trojan or worm infection! Check it out!
