The few threads about the new work units have gotten so huge I thought I'd ask my simple question here:

Are there plans to optimize the current app before the current run is over?

I'm not complaining about current run times - I'm just curious.

Optimization question

IIRC Akos is just doing the last tests with a new app version which should significantly increase performance.

We should all give $1 to Akos

We should all give $1 to Akos out of appreciation.

$1 is nothing to us, but with tens of thousands of users donating $1 he could take a nice vacation, even if there is a crazy exchange rate.

If Akos can do what he did

If Akos can do what he did before then I can´t wait.

Akos turned down an offer of

Akos turned down an offer of a c2d machine back in s4 to assist with optimization work, I doube he's changed his mind on this sort of thing.

Is this for all platforms? Including OSX PPC and OSX Intel?

Sorry but I don't know. I'm sure it concerns Windows, and probably Linux aswell, but as I've never used a Mac I'm not quite up to date about them.

I would be surprised to see an optimized PPC app. All official statements on optimized E@H clients both in the past and in the future concerned using SSE or SSE2 instructions, something that is specific to IA-32 architecture. An optimized PPC app could be made to use "Altivec", but that would be quite an effort for a very , very limited number of clients (ca 4 % according to boincstatscom). Just my 2 cents, tho.

Read this thread. My memory of the previous official version optimizations w/ Akos weren't just using his executables (as he only did windows), but he and Bernd worked together on implementing some of his methods in all the apps. The thread above shows that the PPC app was optimized based on things learned from the x86 apps.

So it's possible . . . Bernd can only answer that for sure.
