One good thing was that DownUnda we got to find out what he'd been up to ( or not! ) on foreign policy, nukes, Middle East etc. That sort of thing really is not projected much this way. ( Not that with a bit of effort you couldn't find out anyway ).
But I long for information channels that clearly separate 'news' from 'opinion'. I'm a bit rude in that way .... if I wanted to know what some talking head X thinks about some topic Y, I would ring up and ask them! Otherwise don't bother me. Just pass on the factual knowledge, and stop trying to slip opinion in as fact, or covertly representing the news proprietor.
It's odd, actually. I would guarantee that anyone who wants to simply be a factual knowledge outlet, would make an utter fortune in Australia. It used to be our 'national broadcaster' the ABC but that's now some two generations ago since they've had that role. Certainly it's an empty category at present, so you'd start without any competition. Being the first to do it gives one a great lead in the market. You don't have to make up stories to sell them, and many are sick of 'wrapped' theatrical presentations! :-)

Thats a tough nut to crack.. Its even somebody's opinion on what facts to publish or broadcast. I just try to absorb as much from all sources both online and broadcast including cable as I can. I even watch and read the sources that tighten up my stomach muscles:-) . My browser home page is just igoogle covered with news browser gadgets everything from top news stories from various sources around the world. To such edgy sources like: Current News .
Edit: In Canada it is necessary for us to know what the US is up to in as much detail as possible... as our ex- prime minister Pierre Trudeau said living next to the US is like mouse being in bed with an elephant..

I hear that! The good news is that most Aussies have the more or less the same suspicion level of politicians and the press as I've outlined. When our press get's caught out, as it occasionally does, lying flat out : their usual response is to claim they ought not be criticised as that breaches their independence or is undue influence. It's a convenient patch of moral high ground that fools few, fortunately. Is that 'hutzpah'? You know like when a man convicted of murdering of his parents pleads to the judge for mercy because he's an orphan.
So if we hear of some boner from overseas we don't hold it against the nation per se. And hope that the favour is returned when one of ours does likewise! That's one reason why the Internet is great ( ignoring it's failings for the minute ) as one can very cheaply deal one-on-one with individuals pretty well from anywhere.
As for our foreign policy we call Mr Rudd "Kevin 747" as he's always in one somewhere in the world [ "Kevin in '07" was his election slogan ]. His foreign policy is to visit everybody! Clearly he's had a real hankering for travel which may well be satisfied during his term in office. Well, you can't rule it out. He might actually visit every country in the world by the time he's done .... twice even. :-)

Let me try to explain American politics.. There are two sides totally polarized.. and you have the middle.. which is too far right for the left.. and too far left for the right. In there discourse there is no respect or common sense. You just have look at their health care debate ( I am stretching it calling it a debate). Just to give you one small example among many.. Where you have the ex governor of Alaska stating things about the government establishing death panels to terminate her mentally challenged child so the government could save on health costs. Guaranteed the cable news shows carry it and they debate it merits giving it creditability. The sad thing people cling to their news sources and believe this crap
