Haven't seen anything from the project staff in almost 2 weeks now, and we are hemorrhaging hosts like crazy. I know that frequent posts by the heroes feverishly stomping bugs would take away from time spent doing real work, but at a minimum, during this transitional time, is it too much to expect at least a weekly status update? If not on the main page, where it would do the most good and hopefully slow the exodus to other projects, then at least maybe a note in this forum? In my former life, I worked for a very large corporation, and the minimum expectation for status updates was weekly, although when a major milestone is reached, it obviously would warrant a post of some sort as well.

Well, if you count the release of the latest version of the app last Friday that was the last update from the team I'm aware of. ;-)

However, I get your drift. :-)

Still haven't heard anything

Still haven't heard anything from the staff in several weeks. This lack of communication with things all in a tizzy is unacceptable, given how well this project used to be run. I have been dedicating several machines, and well over a dozen cores to this single project, due primarily to my interest in the science, the willingness to dedicate resources to optimizing the science application to get the most out of our CPU time, as well as the staff taking an interest in keeping us informed about changes to the project. We are still losing hosts and the progress is tailing off as well, so apparently there are others that are taking a timeout. I'm sure that a fair amount of the systems signing off are those taking the summer off due to vacation or heat concerns, but there are undoubtedly a significant amount of users who are getting fed up with the silence. Has the staff taken the summer off as well?

From theire behaviour during

From theire behaviour during the last server crashes I learned, that they don´t like to do many words. Nevertheless I agree totaly you all, that more response of them would be fair!!! But I believe, it will be difficult to help up shortly from the current situation. The figures speak their own speach: Within a month the Work Done per Day [%/Day] has been reduced about to halve!
I´wondering also very much about the silence in the message boards about the vast increase in Valdition Errors within the last time of S5R2. During the last month (invalid results) / (valid results within past 7 days / 7) was increasing exponentialy (linear in log scale) and is at the monemt 26%. That is an increase of more than 2 decades within the last 6 weeks! There must be some applications (LINUX ?), that never get a validated result. What a luck, I´m using Win2K and had up to now no not validated file at all during the last 2 years.
That all sounds to me, that they have more than enough trouble. But nevertheless a few sentences they could write!

I totally agree with that.

I totally agree with that. Somebody from the team should spend 5 minutes to write a small update about what is going on.... People is getting feed up with that to... see the curve flattening!!!!

The Linux app validates fine most of the time, just like the Windows app. In a few cases, results returned from the two initially tasked hosts do not agree and a third host is asked to compute the result for that workunit. In these cases, most of the time the OS in the majority wins, which is most likely Windows. But it's far from true that the Linux app. never validates (see my hosts, for example). Validation problems do happen (as in most other BOINC projects) but are kind of rare.

Yup, I guess more frequent official status reports would be nice. All I know is that the known problems are worked on. I had some correspondence with Bernd about the AMD performance problem under Windows and judging from the time some of the e-mails were sent, one would even think that the staff is working 24/7 :-).

I've run into a couple of units that were claiming credit for 1 amount and my wingman claiming the same amount only to have a 3 person come back in claiming 1/2 the credit and myself and the other wingman had ours cut in 1/2. I'd say that after crunching for 24+ hours and claiming a credit of 60+ only to have it cut to 29 is outragous to say the least.

I understood that there would be problems when we changed gears in this run, but I never expected to have to spend days instead of hours on units, get less credit, have to wait 2, 3 or 4 weeks to have the quorum validated or watch my rankings go flat and then take a nose dive. I had expected to continue with this "experimental run" until the next one in the hope that any problems I or others incountered would help stablize the app. Seeing how it doesn't seem like anyone is addressing these issues I've reluctantly switched all of my systems over to ClimatePrediction. Hopefully by the time I finish the work I've committed to with that project Einstein will have solved what problems there are and I can once again donate my spare cycles to such a worthwhile endeavor.

As an after thought on the amount of credit we are granted, I'm curious as to just what projects Einstein was trying to align with. For the past 1 or more years I've watched my ranking progressing with a stready rate month after month. Suddenly after we started this run my ranking over a 4 week period went flat. It looked more like everytime I took 2 steps forward I went 3 steps backward. The last 3 weeks that my main x2 4800+ system worked only for ClimatePrediction my rankings have once again started to go in the right direction, albeit at a lot slower rate than before. Now that I've just upgraded my wife's system to a x2 3800+ and I've brought the other system online with ClimatePrediction I'd be happy to get back to 3/4's of the slope I had prior to this run/change in credits granted. Here's a graph for the last 60 days.

The period from 4/4 to 4/15 is prior to the new run, from about 4/15 until 5/6 I was only running einstein on all 3 systems (with the new run). shortly after that I switched my main system to ClimatePrediction. 2 days ago I brought the other two systems online and stopped Einstein so I won't know for a while how that will affect the graph.

Sorry for such a long winded post and large graphic but was unable to figure out how to reduce the size of that image.
