I initially was upset/dismayed that we had made a major change and I saw it affecting my computers. I've participated in 3 projects over the years. The only one that I saw, based on personal experience that mimiced what was now happening with Einstein was when I ran Climate Prediction. After my computer ran non stop for 2 weeks I only had 500+ credits and I saw that it was going to take me a year or more to complete the workunit I abandoned the project. I'm not a rocket scientist, but IMHO I'd rather "see" results on things I work on. Whether or not its the number of units I can process a day or the amount of credit I receive based on that work, it's a guage that I am able to see.
...
IMHO this is a bit unfair to Climate Prediction, at least as it is run now. Credits/day rate is comparable to S@H and E@H, intermediate results are uploaded to the server about daily and you do get credit for these "trickle" uploads, which also have scientific value to the project. You also get a lot of feedback on the current state of the simulation taking place in your particular workunit.
As another member posted earlier, let's not forget that today is only the second working day after the transition.
Let's be patient.
I also have a software engineering background and I know that the best way to make a faulty software even worse is to put too much pressure on the developers to rush out a new version. The current version is not optimal, that's a fact. Creating the impression here that most of the contributers will leave the project beacuse of this will not do any good in the long run. The developers should take their time to fix this and after that is done we will all laugh at the amount of panic spread here, I guess.

Well it looks as if patience may be the right way to go, given the circumstances. I did finally get my first credit for an R2 of 205 pts on an Athlon 64 machine and the jobs I have pending are yielding the same number of pts in about 3-4% less time. I haven't as of yet done the math, and at least on the surface it appears the pts received per unit of time is still slightly less than with the R1s, it's much closer, and as long as it's a level field (or as level as humanly possible) between CPUs I really don't care how long it takes to complete a given job. It ain't much, but at least it's progress in the right direction.

Hey, Mike, I just read your post after a really frustrating day, and it's just great how you can make anything sound so positive :-) Thanks a lot for the feedback and I can tell you I certainly share the enthusiasm you express, about both the science and the way the project is run.
I've done quite a few different BOINC projects (and still do some of them), but Einstein is my favorite by far because it has a very interesting goal, a great project team (whose members are always willing to satisfy our curiosity...) and a community that is always good for a discussion and also willing to help in case of problems. So, I'm glad there are so many people here who share my POV (at least partly) and also some who don't ^^ it's a pleasure working together with all of you and forgetting the troubles of real life for a short time. This is really sth big imo, sth someone like me wouldn't normally get a chance to participate in.
Well, I think I'll go get some sleep (it's almost 2 AM here in Germany) and let my boxes do their job.

PS: Unfortunately, I still haven't had any luck with the AMD. The live cd wouldn't connect to the network, my neighbor's WLAN was completely deserted and my ad-hoc attempt at setting up a virtual machine was also defeated by network trouble. Damn Alice DSL! I'm afraid I had to give the host sth else to do, but I won't give up. Someone at Uni, or at the team board, will probably be able to help me to get the VM right, and then it's crunching time again. For the time being I'll have to make do with the Coppermine and the C1D...
Actually, my Far Side Calendar for today is at least somewhat apt ( isn't Mr Larson always? ):
Of course I do hope that the various difficulties will be sorted, especially including the 'lowend, slow, slow, slow crunchers' and those on dial-up. We ALL compose the backbone of the project, despite that some directions of movement cause pain. Please be reassured that the development team is doing their level best. :-)
I don't know what the AMD thing is. I have some bland Athlons that have completed without error, and received credit. One is a rather older K6! The run times are certainly rather longer, perhaps the credit not proportionally so ( but I'll wait & see ), and time to quorum resolution is in line with that.
Without wanting to appear to be waxing TOO lyrical - just imagine getting to hold and annotate the notebook for the master physicist himself - which we are in a way ! The LIGO project, and E@H as the computational engine, is seeking to complete an old work. Because of the exceptional subtlety of aspects of the gravitational force it requires considerable intellectual effort and calculational power to tease out the wave behaviour. All involved in E@H are right in the thick of this, warts and all... :-)
Cheers, Mike.
I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...
... and my other CPU is a Ryzen 5950X :-) Blaise Pascal
I've shut down boinc and I'm no longer doing E@H,I'm going to wait til this all plays out(I hope for the better so I can resume doing E@H),til then I'm back to having my little cow in my systray chewing it's OGR cud.

“Forums is plain English; “fora is just fine in formal writing or when discussing Roman architecture, but could be considered excessively stiff, even pedantic, in some other contexts; “forae (like “virii and “octopi) would mark you as a wannabe. ;)
A few Latin plurals, like “radii, are very much alive in English, and on grounds of euphony are unlikely to be displaced by anglicized forms anytime soon; others, like “indices and “formulæ, are still quite familiar but losing ground. Whenever in any doubt, my advice is to just add “(e)s, as the declension of a Latin noun (which determines how its plural is formed) isn’t always easy for the layman to determine.

I should think a fairly easy remedy—at least for the shorter term—would be to extend the deadlines. It doesn’t seem very reasonable to expect the S5R2 tasks, which apparently take several times as long to process as the S5R1 & S5RI, to get returned on the same schedule.

Regarding you followup post, yeah it's sure looking like my K6-x's could use a bit more deadline time, just to be on the safe side.
LOL, my second K6/300 (which is my personal BDC) just started its first S5R2. Talk about pessimistic, it's telling me it thinks it's going 1640 hours to run it! The PDC K6/300 is saying I can do one in 575.

The problem is that doing so also increases the delay for abandoned WUs getting a quorum. That's a much more serious problem towards 'customer statisfaction' than the loss of a small number of boxes so old that thier total contribution is essentially negligable.
