When will be back online the server status page?
I think, the server load has been reduced clearly by the longer files we get now and it seems to work stable within the last days. So I hope they have sufficient remaining power to put the server status page back online. The last time I saw this page was on 12.jan.07 23:00 UTC, shortly 10 days ago.
Furthermore, since the last big trouble we get only 1 spare file to become crunched. I think it will be wise to increase these to 2 or even 3 files as buffer in case of trouble with the servers or net, as we had it before.

You can increase your cache by increasing the 'connect to' value in your E@H preferences.

This didn´t help. I increased the value by a factor of 4 without any effect. But I agree, by logic it should work. But there is the difference between theory and pratice.

At times, after changing your Cache amount, you must wait sometime for the client to download that amount of work. Eventually, your cache will become, what is desired.

I think it will be a bit longer as I am getting messages saying the 'Project is Down', maintainence or otherwise, it is off the air again.

This shows, how important a bigger buffer of files to be computed is! In 30 min I´m running out of work because of this.

My sense is that the problem

My sense is that the problem underlying the instability with the servers here hasn't been fully resolved. Perhaps there might be a way to do something of a full clean start with the new work units expected to be available in the future.

It is a tad frustrating -- for a long time Einstein had been my top project. These days it is my number four 4 project for crunching -- behind World Grid, Rosetta, and SETI and just ahead of Climate. I've detached Einstein from a number of systems after clearing the work queues, on a few others, I have set it to no new work. If the project is able to return to its prior reliability, I will first change the no new work systems to start crunching for Einstein, then after I really *believe* that the project is truly solid again, I'll add back some of the other systems.

But lets face it, after over 20 months of rock solid stability with this project I (and others) had gotten spoiled.

It seems that the 'fix' is something of a workaround, periodically the offending system is restarted manually. That clears the symptom of the underlying problem (cause not yet nailed down and eliminated), and then the uploads can process.

Read the front page news.

Read the front page news. Says they had a Kernel Panic crash unrelated to previous issues.

One of those odd crashes that sometimes happens. Who knows what caused it. Hopefully all will be better soon.

For those, like me, who have

For those, like me, who have not heard the term 'kernel panic' here's the Wiki entry. For Windows users ==> Blue/Black/White Screen Of Death.

Cheers, Mike.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...
