I have a Mac G4 dual 1.25 with 2G memory. I used to crunch about 9 Classic Seti Units/day and then about 5 BOINC seti units/day.

I'm using Deep Thought, which I thought was working fine.

But now I've been stuck on two Einstein units for days. I haven't been crunching any Seti units. Its been so long I've missed the reporting deadline for one unit that is still crunching. I stopped and restarted via the Deep Thought menu. It resumed the Einstein units.

Any suggestions?

Um, don't use "Deep Thought"?

What is it? Is it a BOINC "helper" program? I did a search and I have come up blank so, I think before anyone can help you we need to get that point cleared up ...

And I thought you read EVERYTHING on these boards.

Deep Thought is a relatively new Mac GU for running multiple BOINC projects. It's really great for those of us not skilled in the command line gibberish.

It's link is : http://www.greenkeepersoftware.com/

I don't think it is the culprit of my problem, although I don't know what is the cause. One of my units just finished, although the Scheduler is now down.

I had a similar problem. E@H

I had a similar problem. E@H refused to pause so SETI or CPDN could run - instead, E@H continued using half the resources and the other client was cut in half also. A couple of times, E@H just didn't allow anything else to start up - I finally noticed it after more than 12 hours of straight running and had to "control-c" it to get it to quit. My solution was to detach from E@H and hope someone can solve the problem and I can then re-attach.

Take a look at your CPU resources using Activity Monitor (in your Applications/Utilities folder) and see if something else is using up a lot of the CPU cycles...

I'm running a PowerBook G4 and have absolutely no problems with SETI and CPDN running and sharing my CPU resources.

No, I would never get ANYTHING done if I did that. I do, TRY to read, at least once a day the forums dedicated to the Crunchers, what ever the project names the one forum.

I don't spend much time in any other forum due to time constraints and the Korners usually get the main pulse of what is going on in the project. The Cafe is way too much noise to signal so I never go there ... EAH was an exception for 2 days right after they changed the boards.

Cool, I had never seen that tool. I will have to give it a spin. My mainistay right now is BOINC View as it does all I need, has a decent interface and writes the logs I want. As a matter of fact I just took the 7,600+ lines in the log and loaded it into MySQL to answer a question some one asked about the Projects with the shortest runtimes ... you have to goto the FAQ as I will not give away the answer ... :)

Yeah, It could just be one of those "things" that happens for no apparant reason. One of the reasons I am going to migrate my Farm to Macintoshes (most likely) as I do work on it and don't have to do the reboot every two days or weird things happen ...

So, I will look at the tool and see what it does ... if it does logs and allows remote monitoring, it will get *MY* vote most likely ...

Actually, I didn't make myself clear. There are a couple of issues. I'm new with Einstein, so I'm actually happy if it runs almost all the time at this point. I think I have two weeks for my Seti WUs anyway.

My real beef is that its spending so much time with these two units and is never finishing them. And they seem like regular 80 cobblestone units as per other people's computations. And I'm always checking out Activity Monitor to see what's really going on. I make sure everything is quit and Einstein ( or seti) is using about 98% of each processor. And I quit Activity Monitor just to save the 5% or so of a cpu that it uses. Earlier in the week I was crunching at least one or two units a day, even while Seti was taking its turn. Here's an excerpt from my results:

At least it finally finished one of those units today, since I posted this complaint. I suppose it will eventually finish the other and maybe this problem will go away.

As far as making Seti and Einstein share, Deep Thought has a manage project function that lets you reset a project. I did this earlier today after changing my sharing preferences to convince it to keep crunching Einstein on both CPU's. It sometimes uses one CPU for Einstein and one for SETI, according to Activity Monitor and its own log. Its very weird, but then its version 1.1.

It has a nice log. But I don't think its perfect. For example, it downloaded two Einstein units at 17:16:27 (local time), according to my results page. The log reflects that it requested work and succeeded, but didn't mention the actual WU's. Here's a sample of the log. Remote monitoring....hmmm....I doubt it, but I've never tried to remote desktop my machine, maybe YOU could.

And yeah, I don't reboot for weeks, and then its usually because its required for an upgrade.

Ok, it REQUESTED work... it

Ok, it REQUESTED work... it did not GET work ... Why, it does not say. BUT, it could be that the BOINC Daemon is contacting the Data Server and has not started the download yet.

I use BOINC View on a PC (ugh, I still have 5) ... and use that for most work.

Deep Thought does not allow multi-host control (yet) ... so I will have to wait for that ... but I am sure that it will just be time ... at least I can HOPE ...

For the moment, I like it better than my "Thingie" so, I will have to do some testing and then change the Macintosh install pages to reflect this ...

THis is especially nice to find in that they are saying that the Macintosh GUI will be last (I suppose we are the minority, the smartest people usually are in a very small group :) )

I think it DID get work. Look at my results page below. The log is in local time, which is US Eastern, and I think 22:16:27 UTC = 17:16:27 Eastern US time.

Einstein sends one big file that is associated with 150 WUs. The description of the work to be done on that file comes in the scheduler reply (not much data at all).
