I have three computers on my network working on e&h. They all are running identical versions of Ubuntu. One is taking 10X longer to complete a WU that the others.

1. PIII, 1G, 512M, 475/862 fp MIPS/IMPS, ~1.5 hr.min to complete

2. PIII 700Mhz, 256M, 478/705 fp MIPS/IMPS, ~2.2 hr.min to complete

3. AMD Sempron, 2400+ (1.66G), 256M, 1183/1899 fp MIPS/IMPS, 21.17 hr.min to complete!!!

As far as I can see, there are no cpu intensive processes running on #3. This is a fresh install of Ubuntu. All are running the same kernel version 2.6.15-27-686. According to Ubuntu, this is the correct version for all these processors.

Any ideas what I can look for, or is this what I should expect from AMD processors?

thanks - mike

No, this is what you should expect from Einstein.

Read this post.

You two PIIIs are crunching WUs numbered 0237 and 0396 - both in the range defined as 'short'.

Your AMD has completed one WU numbered 1397 - in the range defined as 'long'.

And yes, 'long' WUs take ~10 times as long to crunch as 'short' WUs!

So all is normal, nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the quick reply and link. I didn't know about the different WU sizes; new to BOINC and Einstein.

hammarlund,

check the "Claimed credit": Your AMD claimes (and will receive) 10-times more credit (112.18) than your PIIIs (12.34) although it only took 3.5 times longer (29,667 sec. vs. 8,444 sec.). That's the idea and the benefit of faster machines. Or in other words: your AMD does 10 times the work in only 3.5 times the time.

Yeah ^^ I wondered when I

Yeah ^^ I wondered when I suddenly found a WU with 40k CPU secs in my list... before my laptop had been doing short WUs (around 6k CPU sec) and the workstation long WUs (22k). So I was a bit surprised upon seeing such a long WU time... until I found out that my laptop had received a file with long WUs and, being considerably slower than my workstation, had set a new record in marathon-crunching ;-) so that's how it works. Different WU sizes combined with different CPU performance can cause quite some variation in completion times.
So, welcome to Einstein, hammarlund, I hope you enjoy it here. Feel free to ask if you have more questions :-) and keep on crunching.

Beware though if your slow

Beware though if your slow computers are running 24/7, they may return more units per day than a fast computer on for limited periods. My dual P3, now retired, seemed to only crunch long units, therefore was in the fast class as defined by the Einstein servers.
