Yes I can both connect to the Internet from the 2 computers and see these computers on the LAN. These 2 PC are connected on a DSL router with a firewall but even if firewall is put down, it doesn't work...
Do they have personal firewalls? If so, are they configured to let BOINC use the network? BOINC uses port 80 (http) to connect to the servers. Remember that XP SP2 has a built-in firewall that must be configured.

I too am willing to share my home networked machines. These are three Dells hardwired to a Netgear router. Each has Zone Alert Pro on it. The big machine that will do the most good is Dell OptiPlex XPS 3.43 gig.
Does the BOINC software automatically detect and use each machine on the LAN when activated from my home office machine? Do I need to do additional work here?

Each machine must have its own install of BOINC. Every install that you make should use the same account. The simplest way of migrating your project accounts to new machines is to copy the account*.xml files from a source machine to the target machine and restart BOINC.
