Take a look at the BOINC survey results for the question "Which are the most important factors when you decide whether to participate in a BOINC project?"

At the moment, the response "The science is important and beneficial" ranks LOWER than 1) nice looking screensaver, 2) fast credit, 3) more credit than other projects, and 4) personal recognition for discovery (of unimportant, non-beneficial science. . .?).

Perhaps the statement is perceived as doubly redundant, and also as a given for all the projects; therefore not helpful in the overall decision...

Yes, but I don't believe there are only 125 BOINC addicts in Italy. We must be many more, but perhaps many do not reply to surveys. Privacy fears? From what is surfacing here about wiretapping, the fear is not unfounded.
