RE: My Athlon 64 3500

My Athlon 64 3500 (single-core) usually crunches long WU, but recently I've received some short ones - it seems to happens erratically, for 10 to 14 hours, then I receive long WU again. I don't think it has something to do with any files. Indeed, I do suspect that the respnsability lays upon the ratio "granted credits" Vs computing time OR total number of WU crunched.
Seems to me that after a long serie of crunched WU, all in pending state (I speak about 1,000 pending credits or more) my aforesaid computer is switched to short WU.
It's only a guess !

See this thread where Bruce wrote:

The exact algorithm can be seen here. If the host needs a new data file, and the credit_per_cpu_sec < 0.0013, then the host will be given a data file which has short workunits.

A faster host may get either a 'long' or 'short' workunit data file.

Bruce

With the latest app though,

With the latest app though, either the maximum work quota needs bumped, or the scheduler needs to stop sending short's to the fastest PCs on the project. In the mean time, you can hop CPU IDs to get more work if you run out, and should try to stay with a longer quota to avoid running out when you do get a bunch of shorts.

I know it is a bit off-topic but what is the Athlon 3500+ like? Because I'm going to get one of those... I had a look at your profile but that didn't tell me much as you're running linux and we all know the benchmarks are completely different under linux than under Windows...

Nice machines, I have one myself giving 12.31 credits/hour according to BoincView.

However, if you are really into crunching as it seems to be, then what you want is a dual core machine like an AMD X2 3800+ which should only be slightly more expensive than an Athlon 3500+.

E.g. my new X2 4200+ gives 24.60 credits/hour.

Enjoy your new PC!

Kind regards

Alain

Thanks a lot for your answer.

Thanks a lot for your answer. Actually, I got myself a system I can easily upgrade later, so I was planning to get a dual core when they become cheaper... In Germany, the price difference is still really huge, not like it seems to be where you live.

AMD recently halfed dualcore

AMD recently halfed dualcore prices in the US due to competition from newer intel chips. If the pricebreaks haven't trickled overseas yet, I can't imagine they'll take much longer to do so.

I just ordered this processer from New Egg they seem to have great prices. I have no idea if they ship overseas.

On my Dual Core 6600 my Daily Quota of 2 * 32 = 64 is reached after 14 hours (one short WU is chrunched after 27 minutes).
Is it posible to increase the Daily Quota ?

I'm going to bump up the Daily Quota numbers. The faster apps make this necessary.

Cheers,
Bruce
