normally I would ask if this computer is a notebook with an Pentium Mobile CPU.
My notebook reduces CPU speed if running on batteries...
But your host is a celeron 2.5GHz...

I have no idea why a short WU from h1_0192.0_S5R1__4* took 6500 sec one time and more than 43000 the other time...

Yup - you can see why it is so confusing....

Sometimes it just burns through the work.
Other times, it barely moves...

If you have overheating

If you have overheating problems it would throttle itself even in a desktop. Do your usage patterns vary with time? Forex IF you're playing 3d games on it at some times you'd have almost no cpu time available for anything else while doing it.

No 3d games or much of anything else.
I use, email.

The "big cruncher" is my virus scan each night...

So mysterious.

The machine Shows:
% of time BOINC client is running 99.6015 %
While BOINC running, % of time work is allowed 99.809 %
Average CPU efficiency 0.921022
Result duration correction factor 2.101284

If you have your anti virus software loaded all the time, then it is checking everything that is coming into your computer all the time and this does not use much cpu. But running a complete scan uses a lot of cpu. But if you have it loaded all the time then there is no need to do daily scans. Once a week is more than enough.

Your average cpu efficiency shows that your computer spends 8% of its time doing things other than boinc.

Well everyone has their own tolerance for risks.

8% of my machine is "cheap" to me, so I do what I do.

What I don't understand is the extreme variation in the CPUseconds per work unit...

Honza, thanks for updating

Honza,

thanks for updating your table with Core 2 Duo results. I'm not going to register for the BOINC Synergy forums, but I want you to know that your work is appreciated :)
