Starting Boinc in "Run always" mode, but leaving "Run based on preferences" functional?

To put it short, is there any way to make the Boinc client start up in "Run always" mode? Currently it always starts in "Run based on preferences."

I'd like to be able to keep the automatic stop/start functionality available so that if someone needs to stop the program for whatever reason it will automaticly start back up after the selected time limit if they forget to switch it back to "Run always" when they're done.

Assuming your running Windows...

Right-Click on the Icon in the status bar and select which run mode you want.

Works for me...

Well, the "preferences mode" doesn't work for me (XP Home sp1). I want it to NOT run during my nightly backup, etc. script runs so I opted to set the preference to run only between 6am and 2 am, leaving 4 hours for my system to "do it's thing". Well, last night, for the first time, none of my WMI scripts ran so... Plus, I have tried repeatedly today to have it run via the "preferences" mode but it just sits there suspended. So, I switch it to Run Always and it starts right up. Basically, the Preferences option isn't working for me at all and that stinks. Somebody mentioned I should check my timezone settings but I haven't been able to find them (you would think they would be on my profile page), does anybody know if they are settable anywhere?

Finally, I agree with you on the mode it is in when starting: "preference", which means suspended. This is a definite bug they will have to look at in the future I'm sure, hopefully soon (cause it's cutting out the whole night for me since I have to have my scripts run vs BOINC, sorry).

TIA.

I don't know the answer to the timing for sure, but is it possible they're going by UTC rather than local? Anyone else know?

I may be wrong but it seems to me that "run based on preferences" means to check what you have set as Einstein@home preferences in your account here. If you set it to only run when you're idle and to wait 3 minutes after you're idle, changing it to run as per preferrences would cause the client to be suspended until those three minutes are up. In fact, I doubt you'd be able to see it running. If you hit Ctrl_alt_del to see the currently dispatched tasks, you not being idle would cause it to be suspended. I haven't tried the "run only between times" option so someone else would have to address that. Just seems to me that if you changed your prefs here to run only when idle and set the time interval to 5 minutes or so, you shouldn't have any interference with your nightly backups. If you checked your messages the next morning, you should see the client starting and stopping as your computer goes from working to idle and back.

Or, at least, that's the way it seems to me...

I checked my task log first thing this morning and all my scripts ran np, YEA! Since I minimized the amount of space that the C:\WINDOWS\SchedLgU file takes up to only record the last 8 hrs (based on the entries that I have going into it), and the fact that I forgot to look at the file yesterday morning (meaning of course that it is overwritten now), I don't know what the real problem was, but... since I left BOINC running when I crashed last night (Run Always), and all my script ran fine last night, I feel much better now. This means that I don't need to be concerned about running under my preferences anyway.

FYI: my preferences were set as follows - there is a selection for hours that you want BOINC to run between, I selected between 6am and 2am only (leaving 2-6 available for my scripts to run undisturbed). The problem is, no matter what times are selected (again, mine were set to not run at those night hours), the app sits there in Suspended mode. Again, since my scripts ran fine, I don't care about the preferences anymore cause I can run it 24/7. Finally, it was a forum moderator that suggested I check my timezone settings but I still haven't heard back as to where they are lol. G/L.

Haven't tried the run between

Haven't tried the run between times option either, but the "Do work while computer is in use?" option does work properly on my XP system.

The only problem is there is no way to make the client default to "run always" and still leave the "Do work while computer is in use?" preference set to "no" so that the "run based on preferences" mode automaticly resumes after the preset time limit. A command line setting (like the -min one to start minimized) to start up in "run always" mode would work great.

the funny thing is, a board moderator suggested I check my timezone settings but I've been unable to find them (after several posts over the last 3 days) lol

I don't know why you guys are having problems with this.

Oh wait... I just thought of something... What version of the core client are you running?

I have been running the alpha releases for some time now and I have had no problems with boinc starting in "run always" mode. I too have the "work only when idle" option availabe because there are times on my laptop that I need to have boinc stop working, therefore I set it to "work only when idle" that way if I forget to put it back to "run always" it will do work anyway after a predetermined time limit.

yeah Tony, I know about my machine settings (my time is correct)... the whole question was whether or not the time I was telling it not to run was being affected by UTC or Local time

of course, I just plugged in values that I would want to be my local time but if BOINC goes by UTC, it would be shifted so I needed to know which system it was using in order to know what values to plug in

I just saw a post by a another moderator last night mentioning UTC so apparently that is what it goes by (which I always understood to mean the actual format that the timestamp is displayed/written in) but all you get in the drop-down of the "My Account" page for when to let BOINC process is the numbers 0-23 indicating local time to me?????? I'll just leave it to Run Always even though my msg log this morning says that there has been no work available all night, what a waste lol

EDIT: after posting this whole pile of..., I realize that I was thinking about GMT, not UTC
