Einstein doesn't follow my preferences!

I really love participating but I can't put up with this anymore. I changed my preferences so that Einstein should only run while the computer is idle. However, nothing I do will make Einstein respond to the changes. SETI changed behaviour immediately but I'm going to have to drop out of Einstein!

Einstein doesn't follow my preferences!

The science applications for both Seti and EAH are controlled by the BOINC client and it is BOINC that reads and responds to any preference changes you make. If BOINC has seen the preference change and has stopped Seti when your machine is being used by yourself, it should eventually do the same for EAH ... unless you have inadvertently set up different venues or something like that for the different projects. Just check to see if you have set up different venues on any of the projects to which you are attached. If you haven't set up venues, you should only have default preferences for all projects. As a check, go to each website for each project to which you are attached and check if that particular preference setting is the same on all projects. If you change it on one it does eventually propagate to the others but this might take some time if contact is a bit infrequent. You can speed up the propagation by making sure you update each affected project when a preference change is made.

I just checked your results list for EAH. Your last completed result was sent to you on June 12 and returned 6 days later on June 18. There was only just over two hours of crunch time so it doesn't look like your machine runs EAH very often and so you could expect a bit of a delay between a preference change on the website and it actually happening on your machine if no update was issued.

Another thing you could do is stop and restart BOINC so as to capture all the messages issued by BOINC during startup. This should tell you what preferences are being obeyed (the last website edited will be where the prefs are coming from). If you still can't work it out, cut and paste those messages here and someone will be able to perhaps see the cause of your problem. I'm guessing that it might just be the long delay in updating EAH, but it's only a guess.

Cheers,

Cheers,
Gary.

Did you have a scheduler

Did you have a scheduler contact after you changed preferences? If not, do an "Update (prefs)" on the Einstein@Home project (typically open -> BOINC Manager -> Projects Tab -> mark Einstein@Home -> Update).

The WUs on SETI are shorter than on Einstein, so that might be the reason why it worked faster there.

Not the latest ones. It took about 150000 s to finish a SETI WU on my Pentium II running SuSE Linux while a S5 E@H WU finishes in 38000 s.

i have same behavior it will not follow the BOINC preferences,i am long time SETI@home cruncher but gonna have to kick Einstein to curb if it will not let my machines free when a user sits down at them like SETI does

excuse me. if your useing the newist boinc manager it allows for MANUAL overrides by useing a local settings file.. details are at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/prefs_override.php and an example they give is..

keep in mind, preferances are global and will affect all projects you run.. just a tholt :)

seeing without seeing is something the blind learn to do, and seeing beyond vision can be a gift.

nope i use standard app

nope i use standard app only.. had too many problems with the beta stuff-i got sick of problems .. i stay with a older version until they prove the new one stable..whole lot more pain than the old stand alone SETI....i have triple checked all setting for all projects ... still get the issue...but i hope they will work it out, i will give them time, boinc and the project are a work in progress, and they are busy students like me but younger :-)

I am having the same problem.

I am having the same problem. Einstein will be flushed after this batch of work is finished. If I am in a good mood, I may let Einstein run a couple of days a month. But no more than that if it will not allow Boinc to switch applications.
