The output is Lumens. For the analogy, I don't see it yet, so I'm not sure if it is good or bad.

Mike Hewson- Look at the source, even if it is wrong in a technical sense, it is appropiate for the audience. Power by and large to that audience is what comes from that socket on the wall, energy is everything else. I'll withold any social commentary about this, and just say it probably was the best choice of words.


ghstwolf, if you could point me to a reference for the output of a Type Ia supernova that isn't rated in either joules or ergs, I'd be most grateful... :) I think the 'light curve' is where the power is...

Well, you can add/summate power over a given time and get an energy value - ( differentiation being the reverse of integration if you like ). Like distance rate per time being velocity, and velocity summed over time being distance travelled.
Anyhows supernovae really do look very bright in comparison to their host galaxies ( which is useful for type 1a's as standard candles ) - but not for very long.
