I am running Seti, Einstein, and Climateprediction. The problem is that I cannot close (or fully open) the Boinc Manager window. The icon shows on the taskbar, as well as on the ??? bar to the right of the start button (Windows xp). Can't click on the icons, Task manager just starts ANOTHER instance of Boinc Manager when I try it, shutting down totally or rebooting doesn't work.

I know the wisdom of the forum can solve this mystery, but I really don't know what info is needed to be communicated. PLEASE help!

The Taskbar and the Open Window (sounds like a novel)

A few questions come to mind.

What OS?
How is BOINC installed, Service, Single User, or All Users?
Can you look in Program Files - Startup and see if there is more than one instance of BOINC Manager/BOINC?
Did you recently try doing an update from an older version?

By OS, I suppose you mean

By OS, I suppose you mean windows xp, right? Don't know if it is Service, Single User, or All Users, how would I tell? Only one instance of Boinc manager/Boinc in program files, and there are 42 items in the folder Boinc. I have had the same Boinc since I came aboard on Feb ???, and it is STILL running, reporting, and doing all the things it should. I just can't end the non-responsive open window. When I want to see what's going on, I just open a brand new Boinc Manager from the icon in the folder, and there it is. I can close that one, (so far).

Ask away, and solve my mystery.

Thanks a bunch. By the way, I disabled my firewall yesterday, hoping that would help, but it didn't. Should I reactivate it?

Thanks again.

Who installed it? If you, then what choices did you make in the installer? Option 1, 2 or 3?

This difficulty/behaviour often depends on Windows settings and preferences that I can't for the life of me remember where you go to set! :-)
Anyhows, try one or more of the following:
(#1) A double click.
(#2) Right clicking on the taskbar icon and selecting the top option in the pop-up menu 'Open BOINC Manager...'
(#3) 'Ctrl-Alt-Del' key combination to bring up Task Manager ( perhaps via a Security screen ) then on the 'Applications' tab highlight BOINC Manager and then click the 'Switch To' button.
(#4) Using the 'Alt-Tab' key combination, but then keep on holding down the 'Alt' key, this will invoke a pop-up in centre screen. Pressing the 'Tab' key will cycle thru currently running applications - while icons are being highlighted for you in the upper part of the pop-up and their description is displayed in the lower part of the same. Releasing the 'Alt' key when the desired application is selected will now switch you to it.
There's probably others....
Cheers, Mike.

(edit) It may also be that you need to re-install BOINC. This would be needed if, for whatever reason, the Windows registry was not properly altered during the original installation. There's a lot of 'little' entries in the registry which relate/refer to the behaviour we are discussing. Certainly don't try editing the registry manually for this.

(edit) Actually it sounds like a good name for a pub..... :-)

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

... and my other CPU is a Ryzen 5950X :-) Blaise Pascal

I disagree.

BOINC itself doesn't write much to the registry.
Upon installing BOINC, all that is written to the Windows registry is the language that the Boinc Manager GUI is conversing in plus what size buttons it is using.

Boinc(.exe) itself is not using the registry. All and everything else is done from the \\BOINC\\ folder you installed it in.

RE: I had performed #1, #2,

I had performed #1, #2, #3 ad nauseum, but didn't know about #4. Okay, so I tried it. There are two instances of Boinc running, one reads "Not Responding" and one says "localhost".

By the way, Boinc is running perfectly while all this is going on. I have new work, have reported, and I'm sure the credit statement had changed. All the programs are switching and working just like they always have. I just can't quit the Not Responding program. I am using my computer just like always, internet, e-mail, word processing, graphics and media. No Problemo. At the task manager when I try to end Boinc Not Responding, I get the message about "do you want to end this now and lose all unsaved work?" and I indicate Yes, I do, but it doesn't end. AND, I have gone to the Processes tab in the Windows Task Manager and tried to end the process that way, to no avail.

Now What???????
