Just to let you all know there is some problems with the new Alpha version of BOINC 4.20 with windows. The reason I know this is 5 of my machines WXP Pro and Home all fail installation after reboot. The BOINCMGR.EXE comes up Blank althougt the project runs
in the task manager, I would end process of BOINCMGR.EXE and go into the BOINC folder and exeicute it there, The program comes up no problems. The other problem I notice is the work units are taking 50% Longer to crunch.

Again, I know this is ALPHA and I am A willing participant. This is for Bruce FYI's the groups.

Timmy
Unofficial BOINC ALPHA Tester. (I am Still learning the ropes) I would like to be Official someday he he..

BONIC ver Alpha 4.66 t0 4.20

Timmy,

be sure, that on the booting phase, only one copy of the "boinc" is started,
verify the startup folders of "every user"

Consult the takslist

Perhaps wrong, but the crunching times differs more on Work level than "what-GUI-Part-is-used". It shouldn't be such a difference as you are reporting.

Clients can be bullishly sometimes;-)

For me it helps just to close Boincmanager to the taskbar and open it again. After that the info on the tabs is updated.
No increase in WU crunchtime on my PC's.

Timmy, I went from 4.19 to

Timmy,

I went from 4.19 to 4.20. Used uninstall, reinstall on AthlonXP2200, WinXPhome, and have had no problems. I even shut down/restarted and had no problem. Sorry, I can't back you up.

Running 4.66 now (haven't

Running 4.66 now (haven't tried 4.20 yet...though did notice last night it's an upgrade to the developer branch, aka what would have been 4.67).

Just a couple suggestions:

1. The problem you mention seems to be with the short cut, aka you click BOINC Manager from the start menu and it, in your own words

Quote:
The BOINCMGR.EXE comes up Blank althougt the project runs
in the task manager, I would end process of BOINCMGR.EXE and go into the BOINC folder and exeicute it there, The program comes up no problems.

Try right clicking on the BOINC Manager short cut in your start menu, and on the shortcut tab, see what it says here:

Target field

In 4.66 I have "..\Program Files\BOINC\boincmgr.exe"

after the drive letter which I removed from the post as it shouldn't be pertinent.

Start in field

In 4.66 I have "..\Program Files\BOINC"

You can manually create a new shortcut, and point it to BOINC Manager and right clicking on "all programs". Then go into the "Programs" folder. Right click on some blank space, highlight new, and select short cut. It should bring up a wizard that will allow you to create a shortcut for this. Point it to the correct program, etc...

It'd probably be helpful to know if the new shortcut would pose the same problem, or not (aka it's just with the shortcut you got from the install).

2. Might be mote as 4.66 uninstalled 4.62 before it installed itself, but did you try removing the older version first (or notice it did it)?

Thanks for the advice, But

Message 2653 in response to message 2652

Thanks for the advice, But you don't understand.

1. After uninstall 4.66, Install 4.20Alpha.
2. Program Lanches a blank Manager.
3. Boinc is running and crunching.
4 try to quit manager(wont quit)
5. Task manager end process. Must end Manager First. Then end
project if you dont project keeps running.
6. Close windows and reboot.
7. After reboot Manager comes up full screen and stays Blank.
8. Task manager end process and restart manager works fine displays
normally.
9. Projects takes twice as long to crunch. Only one project running.
10. Reboot Windows process is repeated.

I have duplicated this problem on 5 diffent Machines...
Each Machine either has XPhome or XPPro. Both AMD and P4.

The reason I posted my first message was not for help but to head off anyone else from starting the same problem. Wait untill the fix is in.

I'm not a windows guru, but

I'm not a windows guru, but the symptoms you describe, sound a lot like the troubles I had on my old Win98 system. Or they sound exactly like you (for one reason or another) still have a CLI or other program running in the background. It would have to share the processor and that would double your times.

Have You typed Run: msconfig and checked to see if you have multiple boincs or apps loading?

It is acting just like that. Other than that, You may have encountered data corruption during download of 4.20.

Trying to help

only one.

Edit: I completely removed BOINC from the system and did a fresh download of
4.20. Same results...Manager works on the first run. reboot machine and Manager is blank. Task manager> end process. BOINC folder run Manager. all works fine......Times to determined......

Tony I knew what the result would be. I have five machines running with
the same problem, All have different startup programs the only common program is McAfee.

OK Timmy, Let's examine this.

OK Timmy, Let's examine this. Many others, myself included have successfully installed 4.20. As a trouble shooter I think we should look for differences and similarities.

Since it's working on most others what is different from what you're using/doing than others have done or use? You're using a different copy of the 4.20 install (since you downloaded it, it can be different). Did you download a fresh copy to each puter seperately? Did you merely download it once and copy to each? If you downloaded a fresh copy to each and still had the problem, we could rule that out, or maybe just download another copy and retry it on a machine.

Are you using some network equipment or firewalls which might differ from most?

What could be different?

I remember trying to start an Allen Bradley drive and I couldn't get the Parameters to stay in memory. I spent hours and went through each of the 296 parameters (by hand). I spent hours checking connections, components, and tried everything I could think of. Then one maintenance man asked If I had powered down. Powered down? and restart??? hmmmm. It worked.

The point of the story is that maybe one of my dumb questions will strike the right cord.
