Don't have one, but it should perform about the same as a 'doze or *nix p4. The PPC's architecture was a very good fit with the e@h algorithm which's why they performed significantly better than either x86 architecture on this project. The new macs are using ordinary pentiums and will perform similarly.

Which kind of puts the lie to the assertion that this was about cost/performance. If performance was the question, the G5 and the upcoming versions of it are better performers. If cost, then for x86 Apple would have been better suited to go to AMD ...
Well, I should say, the consumer's cost. Intel is notorioius for the "kickback" scheme where the mfgr gets huge financial incentives to go Intel ... part of the current AMD/Intel legal battle ... and the whole reason that Dell is still an Intel only house ... oh, and this is how MS won the OS "wars" ...

For whatever reason Mircosoft decided to use a modified PowerPC chip as the heart of their Xbox-360 (the old one had a Pentium). Whatever their reason was, it was very different to Apple's.

What I read when the impending switch to Intel was announced was that the big factor was availability, quantity. The reasoning you've expressed would have put the lie to the move, had performance or cost been the goal.

I've got an Intel Dual Core Mac on order (so does Bernd) so we can start building and testing an x86 port for OS X.

What will be funny now is we can test how well the OSX binary performs vs. the Windows Binary. (Assuming windows does eventually work on the new macs).

Yes, well the quantity part was in a large part Apple's fault as they would always low-ball the estimate of requirements to lower thier costs, then when they needed more chips would blame IBM ... of course IBM is committing production facilities months in advance and Apple would use up their commitments early.
With Intel I suppose they can continue to low-ball the estimates then rely on the "slack" in Intel's production line to handle their needs. Still in all, it is a shame that such a good number crunching machine is going to be lost to us at the consumer level. Still I hope to get a G5 Quad maybe before this is done. Then again, I may go back on the fence and start to buy dual dual core Opterons too ...

According to this (Sorry, german, you need to babelfish it) article Windows (Vista) does not boot, and trying to modify the BIOS may damage the box.
