Why did I jump through these hoops? It frees up a lot of CPU threads on my Epycd8 system to use for CPU only crunching.

It occurs to me that I should note I was running a 128 CPU at 85% available threads in order to feed my Gpu's reliably (and run them fast enough, with the CPU processing involved with them).  Once I got rid of those 3 Gpu's I was able to make 124 out of 128 threads available for CPU crunching.  That is roughly 18 more threads.

For gpu crunching you can always check out the Tesla K80 at Amazon or even Walmart:

Amazon's price is about $80US while at Walmart it's about $60US

Now this is a PROFESSIONAL gpu so it needs external cooling or it needs to be installed in an approved case that can force air thru it. But this site shows how to use external cooling in your own standard case:

https://linustechtips.com/topic/1340083-guide-using-an-nvidia-tesla-k80-for-gaming-on-windows/

I have 2x K20 sitting around...one is with cooling, the other is without it! Also got adapter & fans.

But it is not worth it to use it, as it spends a lot...far better is to use Tesla P4, like on my machines.

You could run it, if you limit the CPU to 0,9 or 90% of the time...so it will start the PCU tasks, though run them slightly slower, as it feeds GPU also.

It would be very helpful if you would identify to whom you are trying to ask the question.

I glanced down this entire page and I didn't see anyone or anything related to your question.

Sorry about the confusion.

Sorry about the confusion. Each NVIDIA Quadro P4000 would need one 6pin power connector, and the op said he got 5 P4000.

I don't see a problem with connecting 5 GPUs to a PSU nor to a MB ?

Please explain ...

Only problem is, that x4000 cards tend to overheat with that extra power...& they are on the limit with single slot cooler! Experience comes from using K4000, P4000 & 4000 cards on my system(s).

Those cards should have dual slot coolers & those would work on up to 60°C on full throttle!

They make adapters that go from a molex or even sata connectors to a 6 pin plug for drives, if you look at all the unused connectors you may have plenty already. The only problem then is those older pc's didn't have the wattage that the newer psu's do so you could come up short that way.
