Ok, it's been years since I had a Pi. Just bought a kit with the Pi 5.
Assembly went ok, fired it up and tried several different apps. Everything checked out ok.
Installed Boinc, app fired up ok, but when I try to add a Project it goes to "communicating with (project or server, whatever)" the app freezes. It won't even let me exit the app. I have to reboot to get it off the screen.
Anybody have any thoughts on this?
Edit: I just used the software that it came with. NOOBS.
Ok, that explains a lot. I will work on downloading and loading a new sd card with the other OS. Probably take a few days. I will report the results back here.
NOOBS is what was in the package on the sd card. It was a Canakit with the Pi, case, heatsink and fan, preloaded sd card, and so on.
Not gonna argue with that, because you're probably right.
Decided to go ahead and work on it tonight. Pi has a really nice sd card imager that was easy to find. Put it on my Mac and just re-imaged the 256GB card that came in the kit. Only took a few minutes. Things have changed drastically for the better in the last 10ish years.
Popped in the card, fired it up, changed all the appropriate settings, installed Boinc, and away we go!
The notices tab kept fritzing out. Long story short. Several things, like Boinc and screensavers, don't play nice with Wayland. Installed X11 and that fixed all the problems I've found so far.
Still working on a screensaver solution, but at least it's crunching. We'll see what kind of RAC it comes with over the coming days.
Yes, BOINC does not play well with the Wayland compositor. X11 is still the best solution for Boinc crunching.
And the screensaver issue is endemic. As soon as the devs sort out one issue with new hardware and new OS', the screensaver gets broken yet again.
You can just search the forum for posts with screensaver as a keyword and see it is an constant battle for it to work correctly.
You can also make the argument that any screensaver takes valuable compute cycles away from the science and best to not use the Boinc screensaver or any screensaver for that matter to put those cpu or gpu cycles toward the science.
I just blank the screen for power savings when I am not in front of the computer and using it. The original reason for a screensaver was to prevent damage to CRT monitors and show me somebody today still using a CRT monitor and I argue, the screensaver is not necessary anymore.
I agree with saving clock cycles. I chose to just blank the screen after 10 minutes and require the password to get back in. Just gonna let it sit and see what the RAC builds up to.

Noobs shouldn't have been the software it came with. Noobs is outdated and doesn't handle the Pi5 well.
Suggest you use the official PiOS software available here.

Think that Canakit was just using up some older SW packages from past products. Or the order was filled from very old stock sitting in warehouse bins.
