The way this article was

The way this article was written is pretty confusing what this connector is even for.

they say it’s “designed for next gen cards” but I don’t know what that’s supposed to mean. The PCIe spec is still 75W per slot. So having a 150W connector added to the board won’t change that. Unless you’re planning to add power to multiple GPUs. But then again, most normal boards have no trouble supplying power to 2 GPUs anyway without any power connector at all. And I supply power to 7x GPUs no problem with just the 6-pin connector on my boards.

sounds like marketing nonsense. Or some miscommunication in how this is actually used.

I dug a little deeper and am

I dug a little deeper and am skeptical of how this will help anyone. Here is a little more info: https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/motherboards/msis-x870-boards-get-gpu-power-boost-for-pcie-slots-with-new-power-connector-atx-31-ready-motherboards-have-an-extra-connector-to-feed-power-hungry-gpus-and-multi-gpu-setups

It's supposed to help with "power excursion". Am I having issues with power excursions on the gpus that is preventing them from functioning properly? Well, they mb maker would like to make us think that.

So, this is a slightly updated pcie spec?

Well, that is tax for the uninformed! ????

Especially, considering that for $800 you can get a complete used workstation like Lenovo Thinkstation P920 or Dell Precision T7920, which comes will all perks & dual CPUs for that money. ????

I believe my Epycd8

I believe my Epycd8 motherboard has two ocuplink ports on it.

It looks like I can buy a cable and adapter kit to pcie 16x slot.

So it sounds like I could drive 9 GPU's off this motherboard?

I am ignoring the bifurcation solution that Ian& SteveC has pointed to.

You can. But be aware that

You can. But be aware that you’re limited to x4 lanes.

I am guessing that at least for E@H 4x should be fast enough to support All-Sky GW crunching.  I can understand it might not support a project like GpuGrid's need for very high bandwidth.

So all I need are 5 more Titan V's (I want to sell the under performing one).  Two Oculink to pcie kits.  And install and power up a 2nd 1600 psu with the adapter so they both come on.  And figure out which outlets to plug them into and how to pay for the electricity.

$100 here,  $100 there, pretty soon we are talking about real money (misquoted from some Congress Person).

So if we get REAL harebrained it might be possible to run 17 gpus.  All pcie slots bifurcated (14 gpus), 2 oculink gpus, and 1 m2 ssd to usb slot adapter (usb riser kit).

Sounds like a great way to crash and burn...

THUD!

So is the "underperforming" Titan V slower that your 3080Ti too?

The rtx 3080 ti when power limited to 300 watts blows right past it. At 200 watts it is competitive.

It averages at least a 100 seconds slower than the others and at worst is slower than 2,000s.
