Linux Mint 21.3 Virginia  Dell desktop yoyodyne   Einstein has been running for a long time on this computer.  I ran an update which gave me a new kernel, which required a reboot.  Then BOINC errered telling me to reinstall BOINC.  .  I tried everything I could think of for a couple of days including uninstalling and reinstalling boinc with no help.  Finally in desperation I completely reinstalled Linux.  Installed BOINC.  Click on boinc manager does nothing.  uninstalled and reinstalled boinc normally same problem.  Tried the flatpack version same problem.  I'm stuck.  I have this running on 4 other Dell desktops all using the same version of Mint Linux.  I need fresh ideas / help.

Thanks,

Steve

Software Manager thinks it is installed.  I can't get it to start.  Watching /var/log/syslog show no errors

You need to open the command prompt box and type:

/etc/init.d/boinc-client start

OR

/etc/init.d/boinc-client stop

ONE of those will let you double click the Boinc icon and Boinc will connect and run. One of my pc's requires one of them while another pc requires the other one. Once you figure out which one it's easy to use the arrow up keys, one you open the command prompt box, a couple of times up for the command line and the work exit to close the box.

A Teammate said he moved the Boinc icon from the desktop to the taskbar and he no longer needs to do the command prompt stuff, I tried it but it didn't work for me.

Thank you for the info.  I

Thank you for the info.  I just tried that but I still can't get boinc manager to start so I can choose einstien@home.

I've never had a Boinc icon on this one or any of the other linux boxes I have running einstein@home.   I click on Administration then on Boinc manager and it starts. That does nothing on this one computer since the update.  Even after I, in desperation did a clean install of Linux, then a clean install of boinc meta.  I then tried both boinc meta and boinc flatpak.  The boinc installs appear to go like then always have.  Watching /etc/syslog I see nothing going wrong but when I try to start boinc manager nothing happens.  Watching "top" I don't see anything boinc related running.

BTW this computer is:

GenuineIntel
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 860 @ 2.80GHz [Family 6 Model 30 Stepping 5]
(8 processors  It has a 240GB SSD and 8Giga Bytes of memory.

Everything else on the computer runs normally.  Firefox, Thunderbird, etc. The computer is not used for anything but running Boinc  and Einstein@home

To put things on the desktop or in the taskbar right click on what you want to put there and it will give you the option to send it to the desktop or to the taskbar. It doesn't call it 'taskbar' of course because windows uses that but I think it's call the 'dock'. I'm not on my Linux pc right now so can't look. ie I put the calculator and Boinc down there because I use them alot.

I have no more ideas on how to get it to start up then.

The binary should be in the

The binary should be in the normal /usr/bin directory which should be in your $PATH.

So open a Terminal and execute boinc in the terminal and read what its output says.  Should tell you what it finds wrong.

If that doesn't show anything obvious execute ldd boinc in the terminal and check for missing dependencies.

I got it.  I  used software

I got it.  I  used software manager to uninstall boinc.

Then I scowered the disc drive and cleaned off every trace of Boinc.

Then I used the method on this page.

https://boinc.berkeley.edu/linux_install.php?os_num=6&build=stable

Then I used vi to edit /etc/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg and added a password I made up.

Then boincmgr to start things up.

And happily with a thunderous boom everything worked.

I still have a problem to fix.  I have to start boinc-manager by command line.  Going to  Administration with the mouse then boinc manager still does nothing.

I can't remember whether Mint uses desktop files.  I think you can create something equivalent from a right-click on the binary or something like that.  I've only had very limited experience playing around with Mint.

A standard Boinc Manager desktop file looks like this.

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=BOINC Manager
Exec=/home/keith/Desktop/BOINC/boincmgr
Path=/home/keith/Desktop/BOINC
Icon=/home/keith/Desktop/BOINC/boincmgr.32x32.png
Terminal=false
StartupNotify=true
StartupWMClass=Boincmgr

You will have to adjust paths to wherever boincmgr is located on your system.  Add that to your ~.local/share/applications folder and you should be able to add it to your Dock or whatever the Mint equivalent is for launching.

Worse then I thought.

Worse then I thought.  boincmgr starts everything up and boinc and the client start processing work units but never uploads the finished ones.   I watched my account for 2 days and this computer never reported in.   This is very puzzling.  This computer was cranking out work units until I did a linux update.  Now nothing I do will get it to run again.   Arrrrgh!
