Thank you for Chemin De Fer.

Thank you for Chemin De Fer. (And some people think it is only played at Monte Carlo... but railroads are always a game of chance).

A departure frome Emily and other "classical poems"

"Over Easy" by Alan Palm ~ a railroad person"

Vivid are the memories of troubled runs
Snow to your ass and flagging guns
yet too I remember the easy ones
Long on power and short on tons.

The headlight cuts through the cool black night
Is it rocks up ahead or a trick of the light?
A whitetail crosses the track in a bound
Eyes rolled back with fright at our sound.

Out of the canyon into bright moonlight
Where over the shoulder in the Brakeman's sight
The cars aligned in a long parade
Jingle and rumble on the easy grade.

The markers twinkle at the nether end
Visible only on a long sweeping bend
No flames from the journals, no sparks from the rails
An answer to the prayer that no running gear fails.

The exhaust barks gather in a long dark row
That feather in her cap is the Fireboy's show
The injector whistles in the Brakie's ears
Rendering him deaf to the Hogger's jeers.

The jokes fly freely on this easy trip
On a crisp autumn night before winter's grip
No switching, no pickups, no long waiting "meet
A truly rare and delightful treat.

"We must be the change we wish to see."

Reluctance by Robert

Reluctance by Robert Frost

Out through the fields and the woods
And over the walls I have wended;
I have climbed the hills of view
And looked at the world, and descended;
I have come by the highway home,
And lo, it is ended.

The leaves are all dead on the ground,
Save those that the oak is keeping
To ravel them one by one
And let them go scraping and creeping
Out over the crusted snow,
When others are sleeping.

And the dead leaves lie huddled and still,
No longer blown hither and thither;
The last lone aster is gone;
The flowers of the witch-hazel wither;
The heart is still aching to seek,
But the feet question 'Whither?'

Ah, when to the heart of man
Was it ever less than a treason
To go with the drift of things,
To yield with a grace to reason,
And bow and accept the end
Of a love or a season?

Thanks to Ogden Nash :- I

Thanks to Ogden Nash :-

I think that I shall never see
A billboard, lovely as a tree.
Indeed, unless the billboards fall -
I'll never see a tree at all.

Hello all. I am back, out of

Hello all. I am back, out of the hospital, and starting recupperation and recovery with a new hip... Can't imagine what is going te like out of the office for such a long period.

A poem by Sybille Jones that captures some of what I am feeling:

Virgin Green

Innocence is the sign of spring,
virgin green everywhere.
Rain burdened clouds plan for the
uniting of soothing showers
with mother earth. Bare branches
seen giving birth to virgin green.
Spring consuming winter's chill,
beckoning buds to share colored hues.

Encased in swelling embryos,
awaiting their grand entrance.
Displaying multitudes of color,
found only on an artist's palette.
Move over and allow nature's showy
display to share center stage with
virgin green. Stop and see the
rainbow's colors kiss the morning's sun.

"We must be the change we wish to see."

Best wishes and Bon recovery! Hmmmm.... some of my friends who have retired have said they've never been busier! It might be like that.... :-)
Cheers, Mike.

"Not Over" it was just

"Not Over"

it was just another night
so long ago
so long ago
i never thought it at the time
the morning after
would change my life

just like lightning burning down the sky
your life was over
and i was much too shocked to cry
but it wasn't over
the day we put you in the ground
somewhere inside me
you're still around

it was just another night
so long ago
so long ago
the sad look i would find on the next day
would now define me
and make me stay

just like lightning burning down the sky
your life was over
and i was much too shocked to cry
but it wasn't over
the day we put you in the ground
somewhere inside me
you're still around

In advance, I ask you to

In advance, I ask you to forgive and indulge me. While I am recupperating, I am writing a lessong plan for teaching opera to high school students, where I volunteer. In the course of writing my lesson plan, I am using the following:

Abends, will ich schlafen gehn,
Vierzehn Engel um mich stehn:
Zwei zu meinen Häupten,
Zwei zu meinen Füßen,
Zwei zu meiner Rechten,
Zwei zu meiner Linken,
Zweie, die mich decken,
Zweie, die mich wecken,
Zweie, die mich weisen,
Zu Himmels-Paradeisen.

Evenings, when I go to sleep,
Fourteen angels with me keep,
Two stand at my head,
Two at the foot of my bed,
Two are at my right hand,
Two are at my left hand,
Two in covers tuck me,
Two at morning wake me,
Two that point the way to rise
To heaven's paradise.

Hansel & Gretel... Humperdinck, libretto by Adelheid Wette, the composer’s sister.
