I have been told the rtx 3090 has overheating problems so an aftermarket solution for the backside of the card is necessary.

Except for the Founders Edition.

For the purposes of this discussion assume the MB cannot be fixed or upgraded.

What is the best next step? A rtx 3090 fe, a rtx 4070 or sit on my hands, etc.

For Einstein, don't bother.

For Einstein, don't bother. stick with 3080Ti. 3090 is like 2% better. not worth it at all. 3080Ti will be more power efficient. it has 12 less memory modules to power.

backside VRAM cooling is "recommended" not "necessary" plenty of people running the 3090 with no mods at all.

No such luck. Dropped 2nd GPU twice after posting this.

Turned off system for the night. Will try cleaning slot and resetting the gpu tomorrow.

What if you swap the gpu's does that work? Or is that a physical space problem?

Ty.

I am going to tag the "unreliable" GPU. If the problem follows the card that leads to a retest of the "unable to run multiple GPUs theory" about the epyc motherboard.

Ah, I maybe back in the market for another rtx 3080 ti.

Well I guess that takes care of that question.  The "unreliable" card now won't even let the system boot from the closest to the CPU slot.  (39050x + two gpu's system).

I have one more switch.  I am going to swap the top of the GPU power cables and see if that makes a difference.  Assuming it does not I will be switching all GPU tasks to NNT so I can test the "unreliable Epyc MB theory" next. Ah, I have a currently uninstalled gtx 1060 6 gb gpu.  I think I will put that in there (what is currently the 3950x+2 GPU system). for now.

After switching the power cables, at least the gpu didn't go "out" (the top light) before the system hung when the OS started up.

So pulled that GPU and the system promptly booted and is now back to processing.

Next stop is install the gtx 1060 6 in the Ryzen-Charon (former 3950x+2 GPU) so I can retest the unreliable with two gpus on the Epyc MB theory.

On my way to installing the gtx 1060 6 GB I discovered I now have two gpu's I need to test.  The Ryzen-Charon would not boot with the gtx 1060 :(

Domino Effects anyone?

@Tom M The only reason to

@Tom M

The only reason to buy an RTX 3090 over 3080Ti is for the 24GB memory, which is irrelevant for Boinc. The performance is marginal between the two - FP32 - 34.10 TFLOPS for 3080Ti and 35.58 TFLOPS for RTX 3090. By that metric RTX 3090 is 4.15% faster. On the other hand if you buy the RTX 4090 you get 82.58 TFLOPS of FP32 compute, or 2.42 times the performance of an RTX 3080Ti.

I have finally managed to get

I have finally managed to get the 2nd rtx 4080 ti installed in the Epyc-Monolith system.

The PL is set to 250 since I am running a 850 psu in there at the moment.  If it is still up in the morning I will install a 1600 watt psu in it and go to full bore testing.

The 7742 radiator is reinstalled blowing out the top and rattling.  I will replace the fans later.

The Ryzen-Charon is doing a logon loop.  Re-install of OS in process.
