Actually this is a single slot gpus for crunching thread. There have been a one or more discussions about this combination in some private areas. I thought it might be interesting to discuss publicly.

There is one specific use case I can think of for them.

  1. Don't want to use risers.
  2. Five or more pcie slots with open backs on a motherboard.

There are several different motherboards in Epyc, Threadripper and Intel brands with 7 to 11 pcie slots that could be used for this GPU crunching solution.

I understand the Nvidia rtx A-4000 is getting some use.

And there is also the NVIDIA A100-SXM4-80GB (4095MB) which has a non-pcie form factor (I think).

Anyway. George, Keith, Ian&SteveC, whoever else?

Just what are you

Just what are you asking?

Is it which cards we would use, or are using?

Is it which card we would use as a stand alone air cooled card?

Is it which card we would use if it firs the single slot profile with water cooling block?

What...?

SXM4 is very specialized and I don't think it is what you are referring to in this thread. See this picture for SXM4: https://www.exxactcorp.com/NVIDIA-935-23587-0000-200-E3594785

We do use AMD FirePro 7100 single slot GPUs and I can tell you that their cooling is TERRIBLE. Single slot cards do not cool well for the most part. I assume the A4000 will cool better than the FirePros, but still not great. Our FirePros will get to 99C even if the fan is at 100% AND the case has good airflow.

A100 SXM4 should not even be

A100 SXM4 should not even be mentioned in the context of single slot GPUs. totally apples and oranges. I'll echo George's comments, what are you asking here? If your intent is to discuss single slot GPUs, then how does an A100 SXM4 GPU factor into that? not that there are ANY A100's in single slot anyway.

I have a system with 5x A4000's. for Einstein they are about as fast as a 3060, or maybe 3060Ti, despite having the core counts of a 3070Ti. they are heavily power limited (140W stock, though I'm running them at 130W to control temps a little better). But this system primarily works on GPUGRID where the 16GB VRAM is needed, but a powerful core is not. it'll run some BRP7 when GPUGRID is out of work. runs ~60C on GPUGRID Python, and ~75-80C on BRP7

you might think my population order for 5 cards is a little odd, but these cards draw air from both sides of the GPU PCB, which is why this arrangement works fine and doesn't overheat the cards in slots 2 and 7.

Motherboard = Asrock Rack ROMED8-2T
CPU = AMD EPYC 7V12
RAM = 8x 32GB SKHynix DDR4-3200 ECC RDIMM

not many consumer level single slot cards anymore. there's the old GTX 1070 Katana, which hold a constant overvaluation (in my opinion) on the used market due to their novelty and rarity. I think there are also some GTX 1050(ti?) models in single slot. maybe even a GTX 1650.

there are several "workstation" class cards in single slot though.

Quadro P2000 (GTX 1050Ti/GTX 1060 analog)
Quadro P4000 (GTX 1070 analog)
Quadro RTX 4000 (Turing RTX 2070 anaolg)

and many other server "Tesla" variants too (P4/T4/A2/V100 FHHL) with no display outputs.

I bought an Nvidia 730 with

I bought an Nvidia 730 with 4gb of onboard memory but when I put it in one of my Linux Mint pc's it would NOT accept the card, it has a NVIDIA Quadro K600 (976MB) driver: 470.16 OpenCL: 3.0 in it now, so I think I have to go back to the generic drivers then swap cards and let it find it then. But the point is they DO make older single slot cards with more than 1 or 2gb of memory that are very cheap, as in under $50. The card IS still a 730 so isn't fast but in theory it could run the tasks here. The K600 card is running MilkyWay tasks in about 46 minutes per gpu task.

I am interested in single slot PCIe gpus from NVIDIA.  I am considering if I could get more total production out of an AsRock Epycd8 (7 PCIe slots) with some version of single slot cards.

What about the NVIDIA P4000 (8 gb)?

I THINK Manli sells single slot rtx 3080 ti's and probably 4000 cards.  If you can find them, they are expensive.

Ian&SteveC, thank you for reminding me about your results with the  A4000 cards.  The Single precision floating point estimates from Techpowerup looked promising.  Your actual results make them look less promising.

Happy Overheated Monday.

Why not just hook up a mining rig instead of rebuilding everything?

Are you trying to fill all 7 slots with a single slot GPU or just the 4 PCIe 16x slots on that MB? Even with blower cards, you should not "stack" more that 2 GPUs- any middle GPU(s) will not get air. If you populate the four 16x PCIe slots of that MB, there would be enough room but you would still be better with mid-range dual slot GPUs, especially if they are blower (in my opinion).

The Mining Rig MB's (8 slots) are too small cpu's for what I want to do.  Usually 4c sometimes 8t.

Setting up any MB with Ribbon Cables or Mining Risers have been unstable/not worked at all for me.  So I swore off them.
