I have updated my Ubuntu to a newer kernel. https://einsteinathome.org/host/12777128
After this Einstein created a new computer ID for this machine. I tried to merge them several times. It works, but just until the next server contact. Then Einstein creates again a new computer-ID. How can I prevent this? Why is the merging not permanent?

Universe@Home is running on the same machine and has not created any new IDs.

Have you tried merging the new host into the old host? Because it sounds like you are merging the old host into the new host. Or does it not matter and a new ID is just created either way?

It depends from the point of view. "into" has too many interpretations for me.
I see 2 ways - maybe only one way is the correct one?
1. take the new host, goto merge and select the old host.
2. take the old host, goto merge and select the new host.
I think, I have tried both ways in the meantime.

Bad is, the history is lost now. The new host is created today and got all the credits from the old host. The stats pages will be confused.

I too have tried both but don't remember which one preserves the old number, I saw somewhere someone talked about keeping their old numbers by changing something in Boinc, maybe Keith Myers knows about that, me I really don't care about those numbers

The merge process only works one way. It merges the old host into the new hostID. It assumes the credits from the old host but loses the original creation date.
The only way to go the other way involves editing the client_state.xml file and changing the hostID to the original hostID. That preserves the original creation date and the total host credits since the host was created.
I've kept the original hostID and creation date on most of my PC's since they were created even though the hardware and even the OS has changed from Windows to Linux multiple times. But I had to do it via the client_state.xml edit which is not recommended for most people and only for experienced BOINC users.
