Requiem for a Telescope

Until its collapse last year, the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico spent six decades tuned to the radio stations of the heavens. There is no plan to rebuild it, and astronomers are in mourning.

The problem is simply the costs to replace it with a better one, no one is stepping up to fund it and China is always saying they will share the data from their own larger telescope but I don't know if they actually have as of yet or not

The New York Times is your idea of a shady site?

They usually give anyone a few free articles a month and some libraries have 3-day free subscriptions available.

Here is a link to the free article.  Please let me know if the link doesn't give you free access - this is the first time that I have gifted free access to a NYT article to a group of people.

Thank you,

Thank you, TIGERS_DAVE!
AURUM: Yes.  I thought this was a well-known fact, or at the very least, an extremely well-supported opinion.

Thank you for that! Very interesting read. And sad and a little strange, seeing as how much data packets from Arecibo we're still munching on 2 years later.
