Here on the East Coast they are few and very far between though they are considering putting some 12+ miles off-shore. Of course all the nimbys are out in force but the local fishermen are all for it as it seems the fish LOVE to hide in the legs of those things and that brings in the game fish they are taking the tourists out to catch. There are LOTS more local fisherman than nimbys if the fishermen can get organized!!

Seriously at my abode, most of the year there is about one hour of enough wind to drive a generator on a given day. The other days the wind is tropical storm force or higher, so high you have to safe the generator to prevent over speed. Sun however runs about 300 days a year.

I saw a 'privacy fence' made out of tiny fans that would move with the wind, it had over a hundred tiny fans on it and it was made to look like the fence was moving instead of generating electricity kinda like those wind powdered metal things that change shapes. The fence itself didn't move just the fans spun and turned as the wind blew, it was pretty cool. The fans were more rotating vertical blades as opposed to spinning flat blades.

Even if this is not the image you wanted, I like it. It would be a real game changer for many who are using Solar Panels and Wind Turbines (conventional) that require much higher wind speeds and need to be placed high up in the wind.
There is a good reason for production wind generation to operate as far above ground level as feasible: there is more wind up there. By quite a bit. No variation of structure can get around the stubborn fact that ground level wind is weaker.

Agreed but for us homeowners that's not normally an option hence the 'fence' idea. I've also see a panel of 40 or more small fans instead of a huge 3 blade turbine that produces the same amount of energy with far easier to service parts. But the idea is if a few fans stop working the rest still keep producing electricity while the huge 3 blade things are just down until they can get serviced when something goes wrong with a blade. The 40+ blade panel is somewhat smaller as there are more fans to catch the air but they are still huge, they are designed mostly for offshore setups.
The overnight lows for next week look like they dip below freezing in two different mornings.
