In that new window, make sure the manager is in the "Advanced view" mode so you can see all the menu items and options.
There should be an "Advanced" menu item. Click it and a drop-down will show an entry for "Select computer". Click that entry and in the box that opens, insert "localhost". Normally, this will 'auto-fill' the password from gui_rpc_auth.cfg as a series of dots, one for each password character. If nothing is auto-filled, click in the password box and type in the password that you put in the .cfg file when you last edited it. Then click OK.

localhost is a single word and it may just be a Linux thing. I don't use Windows at all so I have no idea what term BOINC may use to identify the local machine in the Windows version.
Have you actually set a host name for your machine? Is one of the three names you see in the drop-down list the assigned name for your machine. The manager 'remembers' host names that have been used previously. Is it possible that your current host name is not one of the three examples you saw?

When I use the manager on a central machine to visit another host on my LAN, I see a single entry for each LAN host. There is never any duplication so I'm assuming you saw 3 different names. Have you had a variety of names for your machine and is it possible that the current name is different yet again?
Hopefully a Windows user might chime in and mention what is needed to specify the local machine.
One other question. Do you have boinc.exe boincmgr.exe boinccmd.exe and gui_rpc_auth.cfg all living in the same directory? They should be.

I also have a separate laptop running the same project: I will try disabling or uninstalling e@home to see if there is some conflict. Both machine are on the same home network but otherwise unconnected.
The laptop is running under the same account and email address as I am writing this message. (Which is an iPad on which I don’t run Boinc, just the web account.
I wonder if the Boinc I’d on laptop is clashing with desktop….?
I will log off the laptop Boinc profile to see if that has an impact
Logged off the e@home account on the laptop and shut it down. I have also deleted the .cfg file on this desktop and let it recreate. Still not connecting, but crunching continues.
Next I will try deleting the e@home profile/account on the laptop.
