Same thing here. Exactly!

"Only 93.0MB free for BOINC" Sorry I have 125+ GB free. No sign of where the prefs are and the supposed ability to set the amount of hd space.

Also this is a complete new install. NEVER had BOINC on this machine before. This error showed up at my first attempt to get a WU.

"Your Account" off the main page, where it says "view stats, modify preferences". Then "View or edit general preferences", the section "Disk and memory usage". I believe there may be a bug somewhere that is causing _some_ BOINC installs to read these values incorrectly, because I am seeing similar postings on multiple projects, and hitting "update" on the prefs page (and then update on BOINC Manager to force a re-read) seems to sometimes solve it, even if nothing has been changed. I'd still recommend changing these to something "larger than they currently are" however. It's only affecting a very small number of people, and there seems to be no pattern to it...

Just had a similar problem

Just had a similar problem adter addin einstein@home to my list or projects. It complained only 89.4MB was available. It looks like the entry in the general preferences which controls maximum disk space is calibrated in MB, whereas the web page shows it as GB. My preferences were set by default, allowing (according to the web page) 100GB maximum disk usage which is larger than my drive. I changed the maximum setting to 200GB, and now einstein@home has downloaded work and is running.

To: Lupus, C. W. Tooley and tbr,

To help us check whether or not something unusual might be happening, can you please read the following questions carefully and answer them as accurately as you can. Please be aware that when you log into your account page on the website, there is a link there where you can "View or edit your general preferences". If you follow that link you will see your "General preferences" page. In the second block of data you will see some disk preferences. I'll be asking you to tell me both the values that were there previously and any new values if you happen to have changed them recently. Now the questions:-

  • * 1. What is the actual total size of your physical hard disk?
    * 2. What is the actual total size of the partition in which BOINC is installed?
    * 3. How much free space is on that partition

according to Windows.
* 4. What was your preference setting for "Use no more than xxGB" when you first got an error.
* 5. Is that value still the same or have you changed it since? If so, to what?
* 6. What was your preference setting for "Leave at least xxGB free" when you first got an error.
* 7. Is that value still the same or have you changed it since? If so, to what?
* 8. What was your preference setting for "Use no more than xx%" when you first got an error.
* 9. Is that value still the same or have you changed it since? If so, to what?

As well as the above specific questions, can you think of any other things you may have been doing recently like installing or upgrading any other software totally unrelated to BOINC or were you perhaps doing any significant file transfers, audio or video editing or copying or anything that might have involved the creation of large temporary files?

Thank you for any information you can supply about this and welcome to Einstein!! We will do our best to get any problems you have sorted out quickly.

Cheers,
Gary.

That worked for me, just "updated" without having changed anything. Before that, I had the reported problems too ("not enough diskspace").

The place where BOINC is installed is set during installation and you are asked there to choose a folder. C:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\ is the default. If you changed that to a folder on D:\\ then that is exactly what BOINC will be using. Every file created or used by BOINC is in or under the BOINC installation folder.

If you installed on D:\\ why do you think BOINC is using C:\\ ?

If BOINC is using C:\\ you must have chosen that during installation. The best way to change it to somewhere else is:-

  • * Completely stop BOINC and verify nothing is running
    * Uninstall BOINC using Windows control panel
    * Locate the BOINC folder - eg C:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\
    * Choose a new location - eg D:\\Programs\\BOINC\\
    * Copy everything from the BOINC folder on C:\\ to the one on D:\\
    * Reinstall BOINC, this time making sure to "Browse" and find the new location on D:\\
    * Restart BOINC

BOINC will find everything it needs in the new location and will continue from where it left off. Nothing will be lost.

Cheers,
Gary.
