Just wondering... Is the Beta 18 still in Beta status or has it been upgraded. Not heard anything for a while.

Beta 18

Then check through the front page of EAH for Einstein@Home Beta Testing to see what the latest and greatest is, Ricky. :)

And, I might add that you should also be checking Message boards : Cafe Einstein : NEW: WINDOWS TEST APPLICATION FOR EINSTEIN@HOME.

But, the short answer is apparently "not much is happening" and I don't understand why. In my opinion Beta 0.18 is at least as reliable as v4.79 and, also in my opinion, if it were made the "official" Einstein app, we would not be receiving the multitude of "Screensaver/Client error" complaints that are now coming in.

BTW: Ageless, I'm glad to see you are back!

Stick,

If that were the case (made official), then people like this poor soul would not be on one-a-days for 3.5 months. On the other hand, there is that 10% crunch time increase that is bothersome, not to mention decreasing productivity. Many hosts have a lesser increase, but it plagues the majority of platforms to the tune of at least 2% or more, and a whopping 10-11% for Athlon XPs (and I think I read early on in the thread you referred to that Xeons, P3s and more suffered that large performance hit, too). For that reason alone, .18 should never be more than beta, IMO.

Your friend,
Michael

(edit) - If that part is not cleaned up, I'll have to be dragged by the heels into using .18, and maybe not even then. I am vehemently opposed to having that forced upon my rig. I've worked far too hard, tweaking the overclock, killing off unnecessary services, etc to get my rig down from 5 hr 20 min to it's current 5 hr 03 min ("Captain, she won't take any more", I'd dearly love to break the 5 hour barrier, but I'd have to chill my bedroom to 50 degrees F to get there) to suddenly lose 30-some minutes back.

@Micheal What difference

@Micheal
What difference does it make? If the workunit takes an average of 10% longer across all hosts then the average credit per workunit will also increase 10%.

Hi John,

It's not across all hosts, P4s are little affected, but that doesn't bother me so much as the reduced productivity. It's moving to an app that will crunch 9 WUs in the time it now takes to do 10. That's reducing my contribution, it's less efficient, and that's a step backwards, wouldn't you say?

Regards,

Michael

Michael,

I certainly have to disagree with your position here. Rather than stepping backwards, I don't understand why Einstein isn't stepping forward. Do you realize that v4.79 was built when BOINC 4.19 was the "official" BOINC release? (And, it uses the now out of date BOINC 4.19 library.) Now that 5.2.? is out, BOINC doesn't offer v4.19 on its web-site anymore. It my book, that means v4.79 is "officially" obsolete (not to mention "buggy"). If you look at the Beta app's Message Board (Message boards : Cafe Einstein : NEW: WINDOWS TEST APPLICATION FOR EINSTEIN@HOME) you'll see a lot of positive comments. You'll also see a few negative comments. But, for the most part, the negatives aren't about bugs. They are complaints (like yours) about processing time.

I'm sorry, but I think that a slight increase in processing time is a small price to pay for a product that will likely eliminate the major problem that most new users encounter. Most of my posts on these boards (over 200 posts now) have been related to advocating the Beta app in response to "Screensaver/Client error" problems. (And invariably those complaining say something like "but Seti is working fine".) I would estimate that less than a third of those "recommendees" have actually bothered to try the Beta. Most of them either just continue to crank out failed results (like the "poor soul" you referred to the previous post) or they quit the project.

Gary Roberts recently started a new thread on the "Getting Started" board for Seti Classic users who may have to switch to BOINC in mid-December. (And I have a post there, too.) Gary's point in starting the thread is that, when Seti Classic closes, Einstein will have a good opportunity to expand its base. I agree with his premise - but I think we will fail miserably if Einstein 4.79 is still the "official" application.

Side Note: You can still pick up ANY BOINC client back to the early fours right from their download directory: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/
