proxy window pop up when try to connect

Under the BOINC Manager "Options" Menu and make sure that neither the HTTP Proxy nor the SOCKS Proxy boxes are checked. If you are using BOINC 5.2.2 try the "Automatic . . ." Radio Button option under "Connections".

I am having the same problem

I am having the same problem and I just downloaded the newest version 5.2.8. I have checked the Options page and bboth the HTTP and SOCKS proxy options are off. I have not checked either of them but I am still getting the proxy screen. As a result, I cannot go any further.

Someone at seti
seems to have found a workaround, at least.

I just read in the BOINC

Message 18690 in response to message 18688

I just read in the BOINC email I get that this may be caused by not being able to connect to the server.

I think the advice for the moment is to first check your settings, and if all is ok, then just try again in a little while.

Subject: [boinc_dev] Suggestion for the wizard
Sent: Wednesday, November 23, 2005 6:15 PM
Looking around the Q&A boards on seti today made me take a closer look
at the new wizard. It is quite snazzy however one screen that I think
needs a little tweaking is the Proxy information.

As I understand it the proxy page is only displayed when the wizard
fails to communicate with the project URL that the user specifies.
However there is nothing on the screen to indicate that communication
failed so most people are stumped by the screen and don't know what to
do. Of course during seti's weekly outage today the proxy screen was
coming up for anyone trying to attach during that time which spawned
several Q&A threads about how complex BOINC is and how much simpler
seti classic was, etc.

So my suggestion is to add some text to the proxy wizard screen saying
something like the following:

"Communication with the project failed. If you are behind a proxy
server, please enter your settings below. If you are not behind a
proxy server, check your network connection, verify that the project
URL is correct and make sure the project is up and running right now."

Just a slight usability tweak that may help reduce confusion for new users.

Toby

Above is the message I'm referring to.

I am also seeing reports that

I am also seeing reports that the Proxy window pops up when they try to attach to a project while NOT CONNECTED TO LOCALHOST! Which is why they were trying to attach, because they assumed that everything had been lost...
