Windows 10 and the previous versions of Windows are very popular on BOINC and here. The majority of my crunchers use Windows if at all possible.
Perhaps a thread to help general troubleshooting of Windows systems would be useful?
No OS bashing! We are here to solve problems we are having with Windows.

I got a new-to-me Windows 10
)
I got a new-to-me Windows 10 error the other day "WHEA Uncorrectable error".
When I googled it, it said you either need to update or backdate your current Windows install.
It seemed to be some kind of hardware error that Windows was tripping over.
In my case, it looks like it is related to specific GPU's.
I did do a Windows 10 uninstall updates and later a Windows reset. But the error repeated.
I now have two gpus that are no longer installed and the problem has not appeared again.
Tomorrow or the next day I will try fixing them (riser card installs).

Over in the OCN overclocking
)
Over in the OCN overclocking forums, WHEA errors are a common thing. Either they are innocuous and can be ignored or are caused by Windows monitors like HWMonitor or you have pushed your memory overclocking too far.

Unfortunately the WHEA errors I have been getting have all been part of a BSOD :(
So right now I claim 5 Rx 5700's are the maximum anyone can run under Windows 10.
This implies that my experience with MB limits for running 5 gpus are OS-based.

There are many many many

There are many many many people mining under Windows with 5,6,7,8,9,10+ GPUs. Even with AMD. It’s not the OS.
probably a driver issue.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding something,
but I'm happily running 7 (seven) GPUs (non Rx 5700) on a Win10 MB -- right out of the box ...
On two other MB's I had 6 (six) GPUs running quite fine, but with Win7. I downsized to 5 (five) to accommodate another fast NVMe.
Like I said above, I probably don't understand what you ment.
Stay safe and have a nice week.

I should have said my limits

I should have said my limits appear to be 5.

Oh, OK. sounds more

Oh, OK.
sounds more precise.
BUT, I still don't believe it is an OS "problem".
Either non-conform MB, BIOS hack or Driver issue (as Ian&Steve C. already suggested).
Don't give up -- stay at it ...

What Version of the Windows 10 driver are you using? Date?
I have tried the latest Enterprise driver and the current mainstream user driver. I have previously experimented with versions as early as Jan 2020 on other MB's
I have trouble with "Driver Overran Stack Buffer" both during production and during a driver install. This was most common on my Ryzen (AMD) motherboards and on an Intel B360-A Pro MB (6 slots). I haven't been able to locate a un-broken Mining MB (Intel gen 8-9) that I wanted to pay the price on so high slot counts haven't helped.
After I got a clean install of Windows10 on my Epyc MB I started getting "WHEA Uncorrectable error" anytime I passed 4 video cards. I trouble shot myself up to 5 gpus but own 6 (with the ambition to go to 7 since I have 7 PCie slots).
Now that I have had more than 24 hours of uninterrupted processing under Ubuntu it must be something non-hardware-based in-spite of the WHEA error.

At present Win10 NVIDIA 465.89 DCM (GRD) dated March 25. 2021 (according to GPU-Z) and all the previous ones back to Jan 2019.
Works also fine with all the SD (Studio Driver) versions, but the GRD (Game Ready Driver) seems to be a little bit faster.
Just a thought: Hope you have the "above 4GB" activated in the BIOS (not all MBs offer that option).

Hmmm... I have never seen this before. My MBs are all ASUS, a ROG Crosshair VIII Hero (w/Wi-Fi), a Prime X470 - Pro, and a much older Sabertooth X58 (which likely wouldn't have any tricks like that).
Could you let me know what MBs you have with that option?
