Check on the very bottom of

Check on the very bottom of the Preferences pages and notice the:

"Set default for all new computers" toggle.  Be careful with that.

Make sure you have that set to NO for all venues or you can get a preference profile assigned to a host on a different venue than what you think it is set for.

I did, and it was set to NO for HOME, SCHOOL, and WORK, but not GENERIC.  I then selected NO for GENERIC and then proceeded to check the rest and for each one I selected 'save changes'.  When I went back and checked GENERIC again, it was once again set to YES.  I did this three times and each time I kept finding the GENERIC was set to YES and the other three were set to NO.  I then selected YES for GENERIC one more time and saved it, and I no longer checked the rest.  Hopefully that will be good enough.

[EDIT]

" I then selected YES for GENERIC one more time and saved it... " is supposed to read " I then selected NO... "

In the E@H website project preferences I have only "Gamma-ray pulsar binary search #1 (GPU)" checked off.

In my 'app_config.xml' file I have '<name>hsgamma_FGRPB1G</name>' listed as the only option.

So NO, I do not have any GW tasks set in this host.

In all the responses you have made, it's not clear to me whether or not this got resolved.  Are you still receiving GW tasks which you are still needing to abort?

You also mentioned that your computer was set to the "home" location.  The reason for using any location other than the default (which is called "generic" or even "---" in some places) is to allow different computers to have different preferences.

You have two computers listed.  Is it your intention that both will be doing just the GRP tasks and not GW?  Do you set the same sort of preferences in general for both - things like the apps to run, the work cache size and the numbers of concurrent tasks?  You mentioned that one computer was in "home".  Is the other also allocated to "home"?  If the answer to all 3 questions is "yes" then you don't need to be down the locations rabbit hole at all.

I looked at the tasks list for both computers just to see the type of tasks that each has.  Both have many tasks - 100s to 1000s of all 4 types, CPU and GPU for both GW and GRP.

The fact that your app_config.xml file ONLY lists FGRPB1G doesn't all all restrict the scheduler from sending you everything else - IF your project preferences allow it.  Please go to your preferences -> project page and scroll down and in the bottom right hand corner, click the "Show Comparison View" link and see all preferences for all 4 venues in a nice side-by-side view.  Can you honestly say that GW tasks are not selected in any of the "locations"?

Notice at the bottom of each location column there are "Edit" and "Clear" links, except for "Generic" which you can't clear.  Generic values are defaults for when you are not using locations and always should remain set.  If you want to use 2 locations it should be generic plus something else.  You could also leave the generic settings as defaults and use 2 of the others for different customised values.

Once you're down the "locations" rabbit hole, the side-by-side view is the best way to make sure you have the correct values for each different location.  Spend some time really getting used to how to set and check preferences for different locations.

To return to the "normal" view (one location at a time) click the "Switch View" link right at the top left of the page.

If you are still getting GW tasks that you don't want, please check all this very carefully.

Cheers,
Gary.

Thank you Gary for stepping in and explaining a bit more.  I am now going through both of my computers to make sure that I am using only GENERIC and HOME location (venues) for both.  For now, I want to only have GR be selected for my E@H project in each computer.

And with Keith's and your comments to using the "Show Comparison View", I'm sure that I will catch something amiss, if there is any.  I have been there before, but just didn't do it this time.

I'm sorry for not being more clear in defining my problem.  Once again, I'll try to do better next time.

George, please read this very carefully.

If you ARE using locations (if you still have a computer set to "home" then you ARE) there MUST be one of those locations set to be the default location for a 'new' computer being added.  If you set home, school, work to NO then generic will be YES whether you like it or not.  The system NEEDS to know what location a new computer will be allocated to.  You can't have all 4 set to NO.

If your current 2 computers are in "home" then you really should think about what location to set as the default.  For example, if you reset the project on an existing "home" computer, wouldn't you want it to rejoin as a "home" computer??  If you were adding a totally different computer needing different prefs, perhaps you would NOT want it to default to "home"??

As you can see, setting up locations is a bit of a rabbit hole if you don't really need them and you don't think it through properly.

Cheers,
Gary.

Then would I be able to set one of my computers to WORK and leave the other set to HOME, and leave the GENERIC computer setting in both computers set for YES for the default location for a 'new' computer to be added?

It may be totally trivial but when I read in the event log file that no preferences are found so the "default" file is taken (or something to that effect), I am left thinking that something must be wrong which is why I have both computers set to HOME.

Am I correct?  Or am I dreaming about nothing?

I'm not quite sure what you mean when you say, "leave the GENERIC computer setting in both computers ...".  The setting is on the website, not in a computer.  When a computer first contacts the project it will be told what location to use if a specific location has been set up for new computers on the website.  If not, it will just use the defaults for the generic location.  Of course, you can override some of these values if you use "local preferences" in BOINC Manager - but that's a whole different kettle of fish.

If both your computers are running the same settings, it's much simpler just to clear the values in home, work and school and make sure the settings you want are in the default 'generic' location.

If you wish to continue using locations, then YES, you can set (on the website through each details page) one to WORK and the other to HOME and have whatever default values you like set in GENERIC with the default location on the website saying YES to GENERIC so that any new computer would get the default GENERIC set when it first made contact.  You could make the GENERIC set very safe and conservative values so a new host wont immediately go berserk and download the whole internet when it first fires up :-).

You should have regarded that as a very comforting message :-).  It's just letting you know that everything is nice and simple and that the ONLY settings you need worry about are the default generic settings.  One of the very common mistakes that people make is to forget about the different locations and select the wrong one when making preference changes.  This is probably why you are getting tasks that you don't want - your host is set to 'home' but you're changing preferences for something else.

In a nutshell, if both your computers use the same settings (and have the same app_config.xml file) you really don't need to take on the confusion of multiple locations.

Gary.

Thank you Gary for another

Thank you Gary for another excellent and patient explanation to which I will surely remember.  I'm sorry that I need such time consuming explanations all the time, at least most of the time, but when I don't get something through my VERY thick skull, and I can see that you and others are trying so hard to get me to understand, I feel relieved when it's all over with... like it is now.

I will let the BOINC servers play catch up and my two computers also do a little catch up and when the dust settles I'll try to see if I can screw up something else again.   ;*)
