All the top producers seem to be running AMD-based cards.

My subject line says it all.

I have 1 gpu slot left that I can run with a USB3.0 Riser card.  So I got to wondering.

Most power efficient gpus?  Model

Most productive gpus? Model

[8] AMD Fiji (4022MB) what is this?

[6] AMD gfx906 (16192MB)  what is this?

[8] AMD AMD Radeon HD 7870/7950/7970/R9 280X series (Tahiti) (3072MB)

[2] AMD AMD Radeon VII (16192MB)

[4] AMD Radeon (TM) Pro Duo (4096MB) Examples?

Cheapest gpus? Model

Example might be: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Lot-Of-5-AMD-Radeon-Graphics-Cards-/333463327757?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10

The AMD Fiji on that system

The AMD Fiji on that system is either 8x Radeon R9 Fury’s or 4x the dual GPU variant R9 Fury X2 (maybe Radeon Pro Duo).

The gfx906 is the Radeon VII, his old version of Linux/BOINC he’s running just doesn’t display the nice name for the card.

if you stay on Linux, I think the Radeon VII is probably the best purchase. I think there’s some uncertainty with the RX5700 drivers in Linux still. Plus I think the Radeon VII is more versatile if you’re interested in contributing to Milkyway@home. Just be prepared for the power consumption, it’s a nearly 300W card.

Ouch! You are right, that is a lot of watts plus it seems to be a $500+ card.

What about a 560 or 570?

i know you’re more

i know you’re more comfortable with Windows, so maybe you can convert back to Windows, then you could run an RX 5500 or RX 5600 with less worry about the drivers. Both would probably do better than the RX 560 or 570 as they are now old generation stuff. They work fine, but will have higher power consumption when normalized for relative performance.

The other "real" problem (besides forking out $500) is an upto 300 watt card would push me into buying a new UPS.

I will look at the specs for the older/cheaper (upfront costs) cards and see if I really do want to experiment or not.  I know many AMD gpu cards run hot but I hadn't thought about "why" they are running hot.  eg. use more watts.

I've one RX480 which I won in

I've one RX480 which I won in ebay for $76 shipped (more than a year ago). It can do about 600K PPD. If you are patient enough, you can this card in ebay for around that price. Power consumption is not the best. it is a 150W rated card. To manage heat I got the MSI gaming X version with two fans (not the blower). It runs around 60C with open side case with ambient around 70-75F.

Thank you.  I found RX560 for $39 on eBay.

"POWERCOLOR RX560 4GB RED DRAGON 1X FAN VIDEO CARD DVI ONLY" and since I don't care about the video output it sounded like a perfrectly good card to experiment with.

I am running in a 6 gpu mining chasis so even if I don't add a fan to it, it probably will get enough air.

For what it's worth: under

For what it's worth: under Windows 10 my RX 580 (ebay cost $90 shipped) does about 505k ppd, pulls 130W and stays at 60c.

Tom, what kind of PPD are you

Tom, what kind of PPD are you getting with RX560?

I believe Einstein takes advantage of higher memory bandwidth, so increasing memory throughput has some impact on PPD improvement, iirc.

I have one on order.  It won't get here till late in the week at the earliest.  If I like the results I may order some more to populate a mining MB I have.

I have a system that will support 6 gpus.  5 are already filled.  So I looked for an AMD card to see how it would work on E@H.

It is a balancing act between production and the cost of the power bill each month.
