There is a wonderful document (BOINC-WIKI) that explains your question fully. It can be reached at:

If you only want the definition for a specific term,

You can also go from the main page to the BOINC FAQ which has a whole section on credit...

It is just creating credit without end. :)
This is just a way to keep score for those of us that have a competitive streak in ourselves. As an example, I generally do not join a team. But I "compete" with myself in the standings...
But the most important thing for me is to know that I have made contributions to science resarch. Again, for example, my personal interest tends to be with things in Physics vs. bio science. But, with BOINC I can do both, and regulate the contribution for each.
If you look at my "signature" provided by Willy, you can see that the project I take least seriously is SETI@Home. How can you tell that? Look at the "Rank" column and see my world position, um, stinks. But, that is because SETI@Home is a low order probability exploration and not really science at all (it USES science to do the exploration, but is not really doing useful research - it will not tell us anything that will improve world conditions).
So, in the mechanics, it is credit stacked on credit without end. But, most importantly, it is contribution stacked on contribution without end also ...
