How do I get E@H to recognize my PC and start giving me W.U. again.

Topic 219044

I've been not having work units for Einstein@Home for sometime now, since April 28th, 2019.  To make a long story short, about 10 days ago I installed an EVGA RTX 2060 GPU, replacing my 10+ yr old ASUS GT220 GPU.  It is working fine, my credits have started to go up much higher now for SETI@Home and Milkyway@Home, though I still have an old i7-950 CPU (which works fine for me), and I may replace my CPU later.  But I digress.....

The fact that I have an account for E@H and can readily enter the forums under Einstein, I don't understand why when I try to re-register E@H with BOINC Manager as an existing user it says it is connected yet doesn't give me any work units, nor show my team as Spot_E.T.  It just shows a blank and attempting to communicate for 24 hrs and keeps repeating it's self.

When I had the same situation before I changed the GPU, I had a few people suggest to wait it out for a couple of weeks.  I did, but to no avail.  I had thought maybe my GPU was too old and not being recognized by Einstein@Home any more, which was one of the reasons that I changed it.

I certainly would like to get E@H back up and running again.  I already have ~909k credits with only ~25 recent average credits available now.  Any help at all to get Einstein@Home working again would be greatly appreciated.

When I click on your name to show your computers there are none to be seen, they aren't hidden so maybe you have them on the wrong account? If you do have your computer attached to Einstein then try detaching it and attaching it again being very careful to pick the right account.

You really need to tell the long story.   The best way to do that is to stop BOINC on that machine and then restart it.  You need to copy and paste all the restart messages (from the event log in BOINC Manager - maybe 30 or more lines) into a reply here so we can see which projects are identified, what the hostIDs are at those projects and particularly whether or not it mentions Einstein.

In addition to that, you need to check what account name you use at each project and let us know if they all are exactly the same.  Do you use any form of Account Manager?  Do you use exactly the same email address at each project?  Please DON'T write any email addresses or credentials into any reply.  Just confirm whether or not they are the same for each project.

Most likely because your computer is trying to communicate using different account details to what you yourself are using to login to the forums.

Please send the information requested and someone (probably someone familiar with Windows installations) should be able to suggest a way forward.

Cheers,
Gary.

His computer is there - you just need to look under the 'all computers' link.  The computer there still shows an old GT220 GPU rather than the current RTX 2060 that George mentions.  That computer last contacted the project on April 28.  That's quite a while before he started the discussion in this other thread on May 10.

There were even earlier discussions (last year) and I seem to recall he had multiple accounts with slightly different names at that time, so that may be a factor as well.  I think that George himself (or someone with physical access to the computer) will be the only person that can sort this out.  There will probably need to be some sort of surgery on account names, credentials, email addresses and maybe hostIDs if he wants that machine to pick up the former stats that it had before all the problems started.  I have no experience of how all that might work under Windows.

Cheers,
Gary.

Thank you!! I SHOULD have looked there too and didn't...that's on me!!

I also have no clue how to sort out multiple accounts etc, I have one at another project and just crunch for both, they are both on the same Team though so I am moving on up with both of them.

Warning - This is a very long

Warning - This is a very long post.

And, for those who are fathers, Happy Father's Day!!

Well... in addition to replacing my GPU about 10 days ago, I also added a Samsung EVO 2TB SSD and migrated my HDD to the SSD and have had no problems with anything else (Windows 10, MS-Office 2016, a few apps, etc.).  I don't believe BOINC Manager (is this the Client?) was affected as I had the same problems before the changes.

No, i do not use any Account Manager other the BOINC Manager, and yes, my email addresses and passwords for SETI, Milkyway, & Einstein are all the same.

(Am I correct in assuming that the "start: "work_buf min 432000 additional 43200 total 475200 on_frac 0.912" implies seconds?)

(Comment: If the work E@H buffer min = seconds, then total equals ~5.5 days!, if it equals actual minutes... 5.5 x 60 = nearly a year!!)

So somehow you have an empty master file for Einstein there. My idea would be to remove the project, then add it again and this time look closely for any errors in the log, in particular in the area where it says "downloading master file" or such. Someone will suggest some useful debug options, http* and file_xfer* sound interesting to me.

You'll be asked to accept those unreadable Terms of Use. Did you do that last time? I wonder what would happen if you refused.

And, for those who are fathers, Happy Father's Day!!

And to you too!

The biggest thing I see is this:

6/16/2019 9:43:50 AM | Milkyway@Home | Computer location: home 6/16/2019 9:43:50 AM | Milkyway@Home | General prefs: no separate prefs for home; using your defaults 6/16/2019 9:43:50 AM |  | Preferences: 6/16/2019 9:43:50 AM |  | max memory usage when active: 8187.55 MB 6/16/2019 9:43:50 AM |  | max memory usage when idle: 14737.60 MB 6/16/2019 9:43:50 AM |  | max disk usage: 5.00 GB

That 5GB is not nearly enough for 3 Boinc Projects.

George, I particularly want to congratulate you for your "very long post" :-).  It's beautifully presented and all the extra information is invaluable for those who are willing to help.  It's particularly useful to have the account files and other config information.

First of all, some comments about the Client and the Manager.  They are two separate programs.  The client (boinc.exe) is what controls all the crunching.  The manager (boincmgr.exe) is able to talk to the client and display information in a nice graphical presentation about what the client is doing.  It is also able to take user commands and send them to the client so that how the client runs can be modified.  There is no effect on steady state crunching if the manager is not running.  The client can continue in the background all on its own once you have the settings to your liking.

Many people like to really see what is going on at various times.  In my humble opinion, if you're one of those, you should put the manager into 'advanced view' permanently and become familiar with what you can see under all the various menu items.  Just don't fiddle with things you don't understand ... until you really do understand them :-).  I know, it's a bit of a 'chicken and egg' situation :-).

The above tells us that something is wrong with this computer's relationship with Einstein whilst everything is fine with the other two.  A little later the next snip shows that the computer tried to talk to Einstein.

but there is no evidence of any reply showing in the log.  There should be a line which basically says something to the effect that, "...Master file fetch succeeded." - but there isn't.  I don't really know why but my guess is that there is something wrong with the way the request is being made and the server is refusing to respond.  This seems to tie in with Floyd's observation of an empty master file for Einstein.  In the 3 master file sizes you provided near the end of your post you can see the Einstein one is zero bytes.

With regard to your questions about work_buf_min etc., yes, those are always in seconds.  Your total cache size of 5.5 days is excessive for the three projects when you eventually get Einstein supplying work.  You have every chance of getting a huge over-fetch initially so you should consider setting it to quite a low value to start with (eg. 0.5 days max - best to do that in the first setting and put the second one to a low or zero value) until a few tasks are crunched and BOINC has a chance to refine the estimates.  You can then slowly and progressively increase it until you get an acceptable (to you) number of tasks in the 'waiting' category.

I didn't go through the options in the above file since this shouldn't prevent contact with Einstein.  They seem to be pretty much all default values anyway.

(Comment: No other information)

Your comment tells the story :-).  Just as for the other two account files, this one should contain much more information.  And it would if you could get Einstein to send the master file to you.  Here's a thought for you.  Go to the BOINC data directory (C:\ProgramData\BOINC) and take a copy of the state file (client_state.xml) and paste it on your desktop.  Open it there with any text file viewer of your choice and search for the first occurrence of the string 'einstein' (without the quotes).  This should get you a line that reads
<master_url>http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/</master_url>
and it will be inside the <project> block for the Einstein project - if one exists.  I'm wondering if one does and there is a line in that block that reads
<hostid>xxxxxx</hostid>
where the value given is NOT the value that shows for your computer that last contacted the project on 28th April.  That value was 12623039.   The first thing is to check that.

Then look a few lines earlier for the value of <rpc_seqno> - the remote procedure call sequence number.  If that number doesn't have the 'correct' value, that might be why Einstein is refusing to talk to your computer.  It's part of a security measure to detect if a computer is trying to pretend to be a different computer.  If you go to the details page for your computer on the website (as I mentioned to Mikey) and you see your computer and click the details link, you (and only you) will be able to see the value for "Number of times client has contacted server".  That is the project's idea of the <rpc_seqno>.  Don't reveal actual numbers - just whether or not the project one is larger or smaller than what you can see in the state file - if there is one in the state file.

While you're browsing the state file, also see what is recorded for <user_name>, <team_name> and <host_venue>.

With any luck, some of these values might provide the clues needed to sort this out.

Put ISO-8859-1 into a search engine and read the Wikipedia article to your heart's content :-).

Cheers,
Gary.

Thank you Gary for a VERY

Thank you Gary for a VERY informative post.  The more I do this (S@H, M@H, E@H) the more I enjoy reading posts in the forums and especially ones that truly make sense... like yours.  And thank you for the kind comments about my post.

I knew you wanted/needed info to help, and your comment to Mikey: I think that George himself (or someone with physical access to the computer) will be the only person that can sort this out.  There will probably need to be some sort of surgery on account names, credentials, email addresses and maybe hostIDs if he wants that machine to pick up the former stats that it had before all the problems started. ...led me to do some digging.  Thanks for the tips.

You mentioned saving a copy of the state file to the desktop, and I will also copy/paste your post into a MS-Word doc and save it to the desktop as well and read/study what's in them.

I'm not sure when I'll get back to this post as I am in the process of moving, but I will be back for sure.

Thanks again.

George
