As the title says: How do I get SETI@Home to give my computer an ID number?

I am having trouble getting SETI to connect to my PC. I have Einstein@Home and Milkyway@Home running on my PC, and they seem to be doing fine now with about 980k worth of credit between the two of them. But SETI has been giving me trouble for a while. I have even changed my email address and password, negating the original 432k credits I had before I screwed it up in February. I have not been able to get it back online since.

Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What happens when you open

What happens when you open Boinc Manager and click on the menu item "Tools - Add project" and then choose Seti@home from the list of projects and then choose "Yes, existing user" and use your old Seti account info?

Hi HOLMIS,

Thanks for the input.  When I do as you suggested I get a "deferred..." message of about 1 1/2 minutes, ~4 minutes, and then for 24 hours.  I have been getting this message in BOINC Manager for roughly 6 months.

I'm a bit puzzled about why

I'm a bit puzzled about why you would ask this at Einstein rather than at Seti?

When I click on your name here, it shows the projects you are attached to.  If I click the Seti link in your list of projects, I can see your account over at Seti.  The first thing I noticed is that your user name here is different from your name at Seti.  When you say, "... I have not been able to get it back online" are you really saying that you can't login to your Seti account?

If I click the 'all computers' link in your Seti account (rather than just the last 30 days) I can see two hosts.

  1.  ID=8496203 - dual core/4 threads CPU, i3-3225 running Linux - last active 10 Apr 2018.
  2.  ID=8367766 - quad core/8 threads CPU, i7 950 running Win7 - last active 25 Feb 2018

 Is either of these the ID that your machine in question should have?

Can you actually login to Seti, either with your latest credentials, or with the former ones, or even with the <authenticator> details that are stored in your Seti account file (account_seti......xml) which you should be able to find in your BOINC data directory?  Can you work out if you may have inadvertently created two separate accounts for yourself at Seti?  Perhaps if you can login with your authenticator, you could setup a username, email address and password over there that are the same as what you use at your working projects.

Cheers,
Gary.

Hi Gary, Sorry for the three

Hi Gary,

Sorry for the three weeks I been away, but I'm back.

To answer your first question as to why I'm at Einstein instead of SETI to ask for help, when I log into SETI and see my (approximate) 432k credits, I cannot go to the community forums and ask for help because my recent average credit is at 0.08 and it says I must have an account that is active and recent credit average.

To answer your second question, no, I am able to login my SETI account at the main login page.

The two different computer IDs are from my PC, the Win7, and a friends, the Linux computer. I had asked him to login under my account with his PC to see if it would let him in and be able to get credits to my account, and he did get credit for me. I had started using the Win7 PC when I first signed up on Oct. 23rd, 2017. Around the time I started having problems I had upgraded my PC to Win10, it's been so ever since, and I haven't been able to figure out my SETI problems since I upgraded. BTW this is an old PC, about 9 yrs old - yes, all original parts - same MB, CPU, GPU, HDD and memory. It did burn out a power supply so I changed that, but all else is the same. It is still working good enough for me, I don't plays games or have multiple displays (though I could). I'm now current with Windows 10 Pro, Version 1809 (OS Build 17763.1). But I digress...

Yes, I can log into my SETI account at "https://setiathome.berkeley.edu//login_form.php?next_url=", but when I went to my "c:/programdata/BOINC/account_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml" file, it gives me an authenticator which I cannot login with or I do not know how to use it to log in.

Yes, I did try multiple accounts (3) with new email addresses and passwords, but to no avail. By now I've tried so many different ways to get my SETI account active that I'm confused as to which email and password combination actually works. I even went so far as to delete my SETI account and wait more than two weeks and try again, but apparently I didn't wait long enough. I'm back to the same situation.

ANYTHING you can come up with that results in getting my SETI account active again would be GREATLY appreciated. I will be in your debt forever...

If you go to the main page of the SETI message boards, right at the top there is a link to the Questions & Answers section.  If you follow that link you will see a number of topics under which you could post a request for help.  I would suggest the "General Issues - Getting Started" section as being appropriate.  I just had a look at that section and the most recent thread there was started by a person with essentially zero recent average credit.  I would be extremely surprised if it were not possible to ask for help anywhere in the Q&A section, even with no recent credit.

Geo1 wrote:

In my previous message, I made suggestions about alternative methods for login.  If you are able to login in the normal way, you don't need any of the alternatives.  I mentioned the authenticator as a third option just in case neither of your sets of credentials (original account, new account) allowed you to login.

You are now mentioning that you have upgraded your machine from Win7 to Win10.  I imagine you would have had to reinstall BOINC after the upgrade.  As you are successfully running other projects (like Einstein) it seems unlikely there is anything wrong with the BOINC installation.

In your extremely brief reply to Holmis, the only thing you mentioned was "deferred" for increasing amounts of time.  All that probably means is that your BOINC client could not establish a connection to the Seti servers at that particular point in time and so was forced to backoff and try again later.  The servers may have been offline, or there may have been some sort of networking issue.  If you don't copy and paste the full details of those exchanges with the servers from what is recorded in the event log, nobody will be able to say for sure.

My suggestion is to ask for assistance at Seti as the people there will be much better placed to understand your problem.  I don't use Windows at all and it's more than 13 years since I contributed to Seti.  I have no knowledge of how things work over there these days.

If you want to continue here, then stop BOINC and restart it and then copy and paste all the startup messages (maybe 30 - 40 lines from the event log) into your next post here so we can see exactly what your BOINC client is saying about projects, host IDs, etc., during startup.

If Seti is listed in BOINC Manager - Advanced view. on the projects tab, select it, click the update button and include all the extra messages from that action that appear in the event log.  If Seti is NOT listed as a known project then try to add it by doing what Holmis advised previously.  Irrespective of what happens, just include any extra messages that appear in the event log as a result of attempting to add Seti.  If there are other sources of information, error messages, etc., that pop up during the process, be prepared to write them down and report them as well as what appears in the event log.  Nobody can see what you see - you have to report it.

Cheers,
Gary.

What do you mean by "erasing"?  I hope it means that you just uninstalled BOINC without physically deleting or erasing all the files and folders that would still be left after an uninstall?  If you deleted any files with Seti account information, that could be your problem.

Since BOINC was working for two out of three projects, it's unlikely that re-installing will be beneficial.

If you look through the event log you posted, you can see both Milkyway and Einstein responding to requests from your BOINC client.  With Seti, there doesn't seem to be any response.  At the times shown in the event log, I believe Seti may have been down so that might account for the 'no reply'.  Have you ever checked by browsing the website and looking at the status page to make sure the Seti project is up when your client tries to make contact and fails?

How have you created the accounts on the various projects?  Do you use some sort of account manager by any chance?

The startup messages say "Running under account georg".  Your name here seems to be Geo1 and if I look at your profile page here and click on the Seti link shown there, I end up over at Seti at an account named 'George' which does have the two computers I mentioned previously.  So is that your problem?  There are three accounts at seti called 'georg'.  Do any of those belong to you?  Can you actually login to the account 'George'?  What happens if you look at your profile page here at Einstein and click on the Seti link?  When you get to Seti, can you login as George?

If you can login as 'George' why don't you retry exactly what Holmis suggested but this time use the 'George' user details and password?  I'm guessing you didn't use those last time.

I was interested in the lines:-

It would appear that all these refer to Seti and if so, and because there are no errors mentioned, the account data file exists and there are 163 project files in the project directory.  You might like to check both of those things.  The account file should be named "account_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml" or something like that. and should be in the BOINC Data directory.  There should also be a subdirectory called projects which contains three further directories - one for each of your projects.  I'm just seeking confirmation that the Seti project directory and the files in it are intact.

If none of the above lead to a successful outcome, it's time to get your hands dirty.  Go to your BOINC data directory and find the state file (called client_state.xml).  You don't need to stop BOINC you just need to make a copy of that file and paste it somewhere outside the BOINC tree - you could put it on the desktop if you like.  You then need to browse that file with a plain text editor to see what is inside it.  Windows notepad or equivalent would be fine.  You will be looking for the Seti project.  I can't show you an example but I can for the Einstein project (which you will have in your file also.  Here is what you are searching for - but for Seti and NOT Einstein.

<project>
     <master_url>http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/</master_url>       <-- Make sure this refers to Seti!!
     <project_name>Einstein@Home</project_name>                  <-- ditto!!

     <userid>nnnnn</userid>
     <teamid>nnnnn</teamid>
     <hostid>nnnnn</hostid>
      ....

There should be 3 <project> sections in the state file.  Once you find the one belonging to Seti and without posting any sensitive information, what are the values for the same sort of parameters that I've posted above?  I'm particularly interested in the <user_name>, the <userid> and the <hostid> (if any).

Cheers,
Gary.

Hi Gary,

Once again I'd like to thank you for a very thorough response. I will get to do this after dinner, after I presume the server is through with it's weekly maintenance.  I will get back to you, if not tonight then tomorrow.

Thanks again!

Hi Gary, Sorry it took so

Hi Gary,

Sorry it took so long to get back to you, but now I'm hear.

You said:

What do you mean by "erasing"?  I hope it means that you just uninstalled BOINC without physically deleting or erasing all the files and folders that would still be left after an uninstall?  If you deleted any files with Seti account information, that could be your problem.

I don't think I did, it was back in February when this all began, and I've been having trouble with SETI since.

Since BOINC was working for two out of three projects, it's unlikely that re-installing will be beneficial.

It may be too late now.  I've already deleted and reinstalled BOINC, a couple of times.

As of today, of the 95 web servers just for SETI, 5 are disabled and 16 are not running.  My SETI account is still deferring another 24 hrs.

How have you created the accounts on the various projects?  Do you use some sort of account manager by any chance?

Yes, I have used both BOINC Manager and gridrepublic.org at one time or another, as well as the websites for each of SETI, Einstein, and Milkyway for my accounts.  I've since deleted gridrepublic.org after first disconnecting it from my three accounts, and now I only use the three websites for account preferences. I do not remember if I made the accounts from the websites or BOINC Manager.

The startup messages say "Running under account georg".  Your name here seems to be Geo1 and if I look at your profile page here and click on the Seti link shown there, I end up over at Seti at an account named 'George' which does have the two computers I mentioned previously.  So is that your problem?

When I click on the SETI link in my Einstein account it does refer me to the 'George' account in SETI.  While it has two computers listed, one of them is not Windows 10, it is still Windows 7 which was the original computer I started with.  I now have upgraded the same computer to Windows 10.  And no, I do not think that is my problem.

There are three accounts at seti called 'georg'.  Do any of those belong to you?

Yes, they all belong to me.  When I set up my computer to Windows 10 , I'm listed as 'georg', not 'george', intentionally.  I'm not sure why SETI servers do that, but they are mine.

Can you actually login to the account 'George'?  What happens if you look at your profile page here at Einstein and click on the Seti link?  When you get to Seti, can you login as George?

Yes, when I login into Einstein and click on the SETI link it takes me to my SETI account named George. I do not need to log in anymore, my account is open at SETI.

When I login directly in to SETI, my computer asks me for my email address and password.  From there I have no where to go to change my 'name' for the account.  I am using 'george.generke.007@outlook.com' as my email address to log into SETI to get to the account named 'George'.  I also use the same email email address and password to log into Einstein.  I have set up my Einstein account with the name 'Geo1' intentionally.  I now have three other accounts which I log into SETI with different email addresses and passwords.  They all have not connected at all with the SETI severs, so my account pages shows '0' credits and '0' average.

Incidentally, when I logged into my SETI account with the email address above, and then I log into SETI with each of the other three accounts, they all say I'm already logged in.  I just thought it was an ID from my computer that identified me as already logged in.  I may be wrong.

If you can login as 'George' why don't you retry exactly what Holmis suggested but this time use the 'George' user details and password?  I'm guessing you didn't use those last time.

Holmis said:

What happens when you open Boinc Manager and click on the menu item "Tools - Add project" and then choose Seti@home from the list of projects and then choose "Yes, existing user" and use your old Seti account info?

That was exactly what I did.  I did what Holmis said.  I logged into SETI as I stated above.

I was interested in the lines:-

Yes, the second folder 'projects' is present with each of my three projects, but there are no contents for 'setiathome.berkeley.edu', it is empty.

<project>
     <master_url>http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/</master_url>       <-- Make sure this refers to Seti!!
     <project_name>Einstein@Home</project_name>                  <-- ditto!!
     ....
     <user_name>Gary Roberts</user_name>
     ....
     <host_venue>home</host_venue>
     ....
     ....
     <rpc_seqno>nnnnn</rpc_seqno>
     <userid>nnnnn</userid>
     <teamid>nnnnn</teamid>
     <hostid>nnnnn</hostid>
      ....

There should be 3 <project> sections in the state file.  Once you find the one belonging to Seti and without posting any sensitive information, what are the values for the same sort of parameters that I've posted above?  I'm particularly interested in the <user_name>, the <userid> and the <hostid> (if any).

I've copied the section where it starts with <<<master_url>http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/</master_url>>> through to where it ends with <<<disk_share>1417339207.680000</disk_share>>>.  This is the only thing I found in the file under SETI.

What can I do with the empty file 'setiathome.berkeley.edu' and the file 'client_state.xml'?

Hi Gary, I was looking for

Hi Gary,

I was looking for more answers to my problem in the files from SETI, going through Projects, Science, Computing, Community, and Site.  I found this page: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Host_identification_and_merging

It talks about the  client_state.xml  file here:

Host identification and merging

We haven't found a universal hardware-level mechanism (CPU chip ID, MAC address) for uniquely identifying computers. So we do it in software as follows: When a computer first contacts a project's scheduling server, the server creates a database record for the computer, which includes an integer ID and an RPC sequence number. The ID and RPC sequence number are also stored in the client's client_state.xml file. The client increments the RPC sequence number on each scheduler RPC request.

If the scheduling server receives an RPC with a sequence number less than the expected sequence number (usually indicating that the you have copied the client_state.xml file between computers) it creates a new database record and returns a new ID.

Now I found this interesting, but I did not copy any thing when I first signed up to any of my account projects for SETI, Einstein, or Mlkyway or any other project at any time.

At the bottom of the page:

Alternate identification method at World Community Grid

WCG uses a different method to recognize existing devices to prevent duplicate registrations. The server compares the following host information:

  • user name (network name of host)
  • domain_name (The default on Windows is "WORKGROUP")
  • ip_addr (the ip of the client on the local network)
  • operating system name
  • processor vendor
  • memory

The most recent record that matches these attributes (if found) will be re-used. It will cancel any results currently assigned to the client, and then issue new work. This is because a user might be trying to clear out some work that was causing some form of trouble. If any of this information is hidden through for instance setting the <suppress_net_info> flag in the cc_config.xml file suppressing the IP address or domain_name, the method fails and will create a new device registration.

Among other things, I think  'ip_addr (the ip of the client on the local network)'  may have something to do with it.   I live in a nursing home with 220 beds and the owners (when I first signed up for SETI on 10-23-2017) had sold out to a new ownership on November 1, 2017.  Since then I think they have changed over to a new ISP.

Do you think that this could have anything to do with it?

Here is my current  cc_config.xml  file:

<cc_config>
<log_flags>
</log_flags>
<options>
<http_1_0>1</http_1_0>
</options>
</cc_config>

I know it is fairly skimpy, but I got the file info from a man named Ageless (a.k.a. Jord).

Here is the  cc_config.xml  file that I replaced:

<cc_config>
   -<log_flags>
      <cpu_sched_debug>0</cpu_sched_debug>
      <work_fetch_debug>0</work_fetch_debug>
      <rr_simulation>0</rr_simulation>

      <report_results_immediately>1</report_results_immediately>
   </options>
</cc_config>

And here is my "original"  cc_config.xml  file:
