Man I would love to have a

Man I would love to have a Power9 system! Such awesome chips. High core count, high clocks, and 4-way or 8-way SMT!

I must admit that I have a sweet spot for IBM. Truly one of the forbearers of so much technical innovation (100+ years old!) and present at every transformational shift in computing. They've watched entire eras of computing come and go. Still a juggernaut today.

I grew up near their World HQ in Armonk NY as well as their many Research Campus all around the Hudson Valley. Until 2015 IBM operated a chip fab in East Fishkill, making different generations of POWER CPU's and it's many derivatives (PowerPC, Cell, and the many custom PPC chips used in game consoles, networking equipment and other embedded systems) as well as FPGA, ASIC, and custom IC chips. They produced chips for many well known companies including AMD, Apple, NVidia, Cisco, as well as many many others. "The company has done pioneering work on materials, particularly copper wiring, SOI and Si-Ge transistors and low-k dielectrics." They sold the fab to GlobalFoundries in 2015.

well now you can

well now you can ôo...

Depending on what Mac does with the Power 9 also

Depending on the views of the High performance market and summit there may be many interesting developments as to what you may do with the power of the 1 of 9

You'd think a lot of the

You'd think a lot of the clusters would be looking at them now that Oak Ridge and Lawrence Livermore have them. You can see the appeal of the IBM AC922 with dual 22 core Power9 CPU's giving 176 threads per machine and then there are the Nvidia Tesla's you can throw in it.

I wonder how they go at crunching gravity wave work...

As for Mac I can't see them going back to Power CPU's.

176 threads is a lot on 22

176 threads is a lot on 22 cores and the gpu needs little cpu for this task & afterwards can apply more cpu for the result making the https://secure.raptorcs.com/content/TL2DS1/intro.html ideal for production asset GPU Compute.

IBM POWER9 OpenPOWER LC922 Server & Mainframe rack review

This unit is clean, Everything is plug in and play(tm),
I believe that the fan director is a little thin; After all we want a turbo stream jet fan in there! The unit is ultra reliable and cable free, No side channeled cables to be observed & compact.. on-board GPU range should be soon @ibm.com
