Happy New Year from Einstein@Home!

Dear Volunteers,

I want to thank you for your continuing contributions to Einstein@Home, and to wish all of you a healthy and happy 2018.

The past year has seen several important steps forward, including publication of the first results from Einstein@Home searches in
advanced LIGO data, and the discovery of many new gamma ray pulsars in data from the Fermi satellite. More broadly, the LIGO and Virgo detectors had a wonderful finale to their second observing run: the simultaneous observation of gravitational and electromagnetic waves from the inspiral and merger of two neutron stars.

When Einstein@Home was launched in 2005, the search for gravitational waves was a highly speculative subject, and there were many sceptics. The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to Barish, Thorne and Weiss "for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves" shows just how far we have come.

The third LIGO/VIRGO observing run is expected to begin near the end of 2018. With the improving data and detection methods, and the
increasingly powerful computing resources being provided by you, I am optimistic that the first detection of continuous gravitational waves with Einstein@Home is not far in the future.

Thank you again for your support!

Bruce Allen
Einstein@Home Director

I want to know when you will

I want to know when you will make certificates for the new pulsars discovered ?

Cruncing now on 6 threads of executions on i7-3630qm, several projects, including einstein.

Great project. For me, a modest man with an ordinary laptop, is an important fact in my life to help teachers and students in elevated universities from civilized world.

I have plans to eventually

I have plans to eventually build my own supercomputer. I know how. I'm having a little trouble with the funds, as you may well expect. Sealed

I have a very capable tech I am now working with. I got him started on Einstein and others. Maybe we can build something together eventually.

Best regards,

Mark W. Patton

The success of this project

The success of this project and the recognition it has received truly put a smile on my face. Others noticing my computer running in the background has given me an opportunity to explain to family and friends some of the magnificence of physics.

I joined this project almost

I joined this project almost 13 years ago when the doors were opened to the general public.  One of the things that struck me at the time was the dedication, vision and leadership of the person who was bringing the project to life.  However important that might be, it's not sufficient.  There needs to be a dedicated and skilled team, working together towards a common purpose, (sometimes unloved and without thanks :-) ) to make a project shine.

You only have to think about how successful this project has been over 13 long years, to know that such a team exists here.  I'd like to pay particular tribute to those who labour behind the scenes and put in the long hours and skilled work to keep it all ticking over as reliably as it does.  I know from the personal experience of managing my own hosts, how demanding a job it is to keep everything on track and running smoothly.

So, sincere congratulations to 'the team' and may you enjoy continuing success throughout 2018.

Cheers,
Gary.

Thank you for the confirmation that Einstein@Home is producing results. It is nice to know we are helping develop science knowledge in some way!

I endorse Gary's comment:

These projects need both vision and an enthusiastic team to set up and then keep running for 13 years!

All the best to the entire team and here's hoping for more success in 2018.

I have run Boinc on my systems since 1969. SETI at home for very long time. I feel SETI at home is ignoring its supporters as they are always weeks or months behind, never respond to individual supporters and have doe little to work with their supporters. Comapredto Einstein where I feel a part of the community, get regular updates as to what my contribution is doing and as of late seem to be part of a promising branch of astronomy Gravitational Wave observations and discovery. Thanks for letting me be a part..
