Some pay a lot more$200If

Some pay a lot more

$200

If people are stupid enough to pay that sort of money for a beer, 28% or not, more fool them. If it was a vintage port to lay down that might be different.

Nearly all this stuff is simple competition between brewers to make the strongest or the most expensive beer to aid the advertising for their day to day stuff. The gullible public get dragged into it.

I will pay a reasonable price for what I enjoy, I won't pay silly money for esoteric brews to fund someone's profits.

Waiting for Godot & salvation :-)

I am glad to just be capable

I am glad to just be capable of some form of common sense. I can afford it, but don't think it is worth it to try it. The existence of extremely expensive liquor does not mean all liquor is that expensive. I'll simply enjoy what I drink even if that is just water.

Ahhh, even water is not that simple. Some years ago if you were in a UK restaurant and asked for a glass of water, they tried to sell you Perrier or something similar at extortionate prices. It got so bad that the UK had to bring a law to deal with it.

According to the Licensing Act 2003 (Mandatory Licensing Conditions) Order 2010, which came into force in April 2010 and was updated in 2014, all restaurants in England and Wales that serve alcohol are legally required to give customers free tap water (the legislation for Scotland is the same, but it's a different act). Those that don't are under no obligation to do so.

That means in practice that because most restaurants are licensed to serve alcohol, they have to give you free tap water by law. An unlicensed cafe doesn't have to, but most actually will if you ask them.

Don't forget also that most restaurants have a markup on the wine at 2 to 3 times the cost price. A £10 bottle at the Cash & Carry might sell for £15 in a shop, but cost £25 in a restaurant.

Aha you say! I'll scotch that little trick, I'll bring in my own wine :-)  Nah, they will charge you "corkage" on average £5 a bottle to offset their losses in not buying their house wine.

It's always been us against them and always will be, as mere consumers we aren't supposed to win. But it is a price worth paying for many to avoid the food preparation and the washing up afterwards.

Your wallet, your life, your choice.

See, it is that simple! It is

See, it is that simple! It is that simple now because it flows right out of the tap for as long as I pay my water bill. Yes, at some point in history there were no such things as water taps, we have come a long way since then. But now at this point in time I do think it is simple.

It is only the Western world

It is only the Western world that takes potable water out of taps for granted. Many many areas of the world still rely on rainfall or wells for their water, and cart it many miles home. The water out of your tap is treated and filtered at the waterworks, no such luxury in rural foreign countries. You get to drink what comes out of the well bugs and all.

Supply of fresh water is not simple at all.
