If the tests were deliberately designed so that almost all females would fail, then I would agree with her. Otherwise, I don't fall into that category.
The test in particular demands that a firefighter is capable of walking up a flight of stairs in reasonable time wearing the full gear.
In practice, the gear is worn frequently and stairs are common, but how frequent is it required to be up those stairs fast? Going down to escape would be a lot more common I guess. So wether or not the test is relevant I would not know.
I do know that it is the same for everyone and thus not discriminatory. In essence every single physical test is designed to rule out those not fit enough and so either all are discriminatory towards those not fit enough or non are. So the way this complaint is worded makes it ridiculous imho. Questioning if the test is relevant or too hard is entirely something else.

Two things here. Firstly, comparing men and women of the same age and build you will "generally" find that men are stronger than women in terms of muscle power. That is a biological fact. Secondly all firefighters have to be able to fight the same fires, it makes no difference as to their gender, it's the ability to do the same job to the same required level of activity.

There is no suggestion that the new test is deliberately biased against women firefighters. It would hardly be surprising if at age 53, many men would also fail a new, and maybe tougher health test. Nor is it being suggested that the lady in question is going to lose her job. With years of experience she could be ideal for a control room position.
If you look at Premiership footballers, or athletes, there’s not many in their 50s and there’s a very good reason for that. Once they get to a certain age, their bodies are not strong enough to continue at the level they did before. When you get to mid 50's it’s only natural that your fitness declines. UK fire fighters retire at 55.
It could well be that this lady is exceptionally fit and able for her age, but she would likely be in a very small minority indeed. I think to pull in the womens Lib angle here is not appropriate in this instance.

Now why would you not be able to make that up? It's rather pointless to call that stuff beer, even according to its brewer. Then again, so are the other types of extremely strong beer as mentioned in the beer and wine thread.
I guess it won't be long before he brews something of 80% or more.
£45-60 for a single 330ml bottle of so called beer is a total rip off in anyone's language. And no you couldn't make it up, but they did.
But if there are enough silly people out there to pay that sort of money for it, good luck to them. Keep brewing and take the money.
But having said that some Vintage Château wines go for many thousands of pounds a bottle. But they aren't opened and drunk, it is an investment to sell on later for a bigger profit. This beer stuff is meant to be opened and drunk now.
