Hi Guys,
I have got an older PC which i want to use at this project. in my main pc i got a 1060 now, which is doing a great job. First i had a 770GTX, which i now put in my older pc.
The thing is that the pc got an 775 motherboard, with e7300 CPU. My card wont get full profit of this, because the single core threat is just to slow to get the 770 on max performance.
So i can either try to thing
-make sure that the cpu get 2 cpu threats on 1 gpu (possible?) for extra performance
-buy a new mobo/cpu combo
What whould i need then to get full performance? i dont crunch on cpu, FYI.

I don't think you'll get maximum performance from such a powerful GPU running a single task, no matter what CPU does the support. If you haven't already tried, run two tasks, which will be backed by both CPU cores. I expect a significant performance improvement, not 100% GPU load though.

If that is true, then he can only do 1 work unit. Be it a CPU work unit or a GPU work unit. Trying to run 2 GPU work units isn't going to be possible as the second GPU work unit will be waiting for the single core to free up. It's also possible that the computer will lock up and/or be a forced reboot since the OS is having to share the single core CPU.
Current GPU work units each require a full core. Same for the CPU task.
So if he truly wants to use this, then I would suggest only running 1 GPU task as GPUs tend to be faster than the CPU.

E7300 is a "core 2 duo" so it has 2 cores and no hyper-threading available. Depending on the motherboard and cooling this cpu could be overclocked about 1 GHz extra. But that would be pretty much just for fun. Not much speed to gain from that with GPU tasks.

Ok, if it's a dual core. Then he should be able to run at least 1 GPU task with 1 core free for OS. Might be able to get 2 GPU tasks but I personally never like to use all cores for crunching.

So now i have oc'd the CPU to 3.4Ghz, not getting to hot right now. Got the app_config file and tweaked some in afterburner. I got my card at 100% load :)
I will give it a while to see if it got decent results before might getting it 24/7 operating.

I still suspect the e7300 would be good enough without overclocking. I may be wrong, but with the system set up and running that's easily tried. As far as I know the CPU doesn't do much work on these tasks, most of it is active waiting. It could just as well do some less intense waiting, and even some bits of OS work in between. No need to reserve a core for that if you only have two and can make better use of them.
To run two GPU tasks? You don't need an app_config just for that, it's a project setting here at Einstein. And with your computers probably sharing their settings it would also affect the i7/1060 combo. It wouldn't hurt to run two GPU tasks there also, maybe even three, but the 770 is maxed out at two.

i dunno, with my 2 gpu task running now the cpu is non-stop on 100% load. So, i think i can even get some better results with another cpu/mobo combination.. it wont chill down for a second..
I have my i7 system for my daily stuff, when i do a 2 task gpu work on that one it will lag like nuts, so im only using one task and when i do some gaming or heavy stuff, i shut down boinc.

Those (Nvidia) GPU tasks always run one core / one thread at 100%, on any CPU. This won't be different on your i7. That doesn't necessarily mean that the i7 does more work, it just spends more time waiting. You can run the CPU slower as long as it doesn't hurt GPU performance and save some energy.
You said your GPU was at 100% load. You won't easily find a CPU to carry it beyond that.
That's the point. Whatever CPU you put in there, it won't chill down for a second. But it's quite possible that it doesn't generate more output than the old e7300.
Your daily stuff will differ from mine. I've never had troubles running three tasks on a GTX970, or two on a GTX750Ti, or both. Plus sometimes some CPU tasks with it. But then I don't do video, or heavy 3D graphics or such.
