A new paper, titled “The Einstein@Home gamma-ray pulsar survey I: search methods, sensitivity and discovery of new young gamma-ray pulsars”, that presents the discovery of 13 new gamma-ray pulsars by Einstein@Home in Fermi-LAT data has now been published in The Astrophysical Journal. You can read the full publication for free on the arXiv (click on “PDF” at the top right).
A press release summarising the publication is available on the homepage of the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics.

I love this blind search

I love this blind search business and how fruitful it has been. While it is good to have hints or other correlations, I liken the E@H 'device' as akin to methodically stepping around on some huge arena. Barefoot and blindfolded that is. When will we step on the next tack ? What special characteristics will it have ? Exciting ! :-)

Yes, this is such a great project to be associated with. Approaching the first anniversary of my joining, the cumulative 2 quintillion floating-point operations of my rag-tag collection of recycled laptops seems tiny in relation to the total processing power used by the project, but also really cool.
13 new gamma-ray pulsars! This news inspired me to resurrect an ancient server and update it with a couple of $10 CPUs (E5540) and inexpensive RAM, and last week I added a modern GPU and now have a reasonably powerful box dedicated full-time to Einstein@Home. And I just got a friend to join, too. Now if I can just get the GPU overclocked a bit...
